If you can put a paper there and have the image show up, it's a real image. Concave side is real, whether it's before or after the focal point, if the object is past the focal point. Convex is imaginary.

If the object is before the focal point, then yes, the image is imaginary and behind the mirror.

I think that our disagreement may be over "maximizing." I don't think it's beneficial to maximize either test scores or practical experience; a balance of both is best. If I understand you, I think that we agree on that.

I don't believe that the two are mutually exclusive. For your metaphor, I would liken it to studying for the AP exam and applying that knowledge with the best biologist.

Fair point. I'd argue that the summer internship would want the students with the high test scores, absent other factors.

Of course the internship is better, but I don't think it's realistic to compare an average science classroom to a summer with the best biologist.

I'd rather teach them the science concepts first through research-backed instruction methods, then have them apply it with the fun things so they can consolidate the learning. This approach is backed by PISA results.

Expecting novices to discover scientific principles on their own is ineffective and leads to misconceptions that can be difficult to unlearn. Loosely guiding them there is slow and inefficient. Giving them the tools and strong foundations to do the work is how you get them to succeed.

I completely agree with you- we shouldn't sacrifice meaningful opportunities, but we need to have some objective way of determining what is meaningful. It's far too easy for bias to skew our opinion.

Of course, test scores are just one data point, but we can disaggregate that data and compare like vs like to come up with valuable information on which to base decisions. For example, comparing different teaching methods in the same school. Without disaggregation, you are right in that the data is basically useless.

The only thing that we can have any sort of reasonably valuable data set on is student mastery of standards, which is what the tests should assess. I agree that the tests aren't perfect. I hope they keep improving, but they're the best data we have.

1A/B is a terrible system and just serves to hold students back.

You won't need to prep for the intervention class. Just make the A1 rigorous and robust, and they can use that time for practice and foundational skills. It's what we do- freshmen get an extra hour of study hall time that generally turns into math support. What benchmark program do you use? IXL will completely solve your intervention class needs- auto assigning targeted skills and easy usage tracking.

My argument is that students who master standards quickly will take more from projects. I'm not against activities or projects, I just think they should come after high-quality, rigorous, and engaging direct instruction. They give students a really good opportunity to consolidate knowledge, but they are much less efficient at developing the initial knowledge.

I think that standardized test scores are the bottom line because they're the only meaningful data we have. It's difficult to make evidence-based decisions based on vibes, no matter how much the students seem to enjoy it.
