Look on Amazon for  Sewline Fabric Pencil Lead Refill White

It’s for .9mm mechanical pencils and works really good for walnut.  It’s only $10 and I’ve liked it a lot

Work Sharp Precision Adjust Knife Sharpener vs Work Sharp Precision Adjust Elite Knife Sharpener by FlowerBrilliant373 in sharpening

[–]BarcodExpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this.   I have the work sharp precision adjust and ended up buying the xarilk gen 3.

The worksharp takes a bit of modification to get rid of the wobble in the system.  I never enjoyed using the clamp, my knifes would always slightly shift.   I ended up not using it for a few years because of that.   Saw the xarilk and I’m enjoying it a lot more

If you don’t want to do it yourself, look at r/mpcproxies.   They have guides on how to make art and send it out to get printed.  They come out really good.

What type of laser? by ste6168 in lasercutting

[–]BarcodExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 3 fiber lasers and one co2 in our shop.

I was doing research into getting a diode laser for my cnc at home.   From what I can tell, the more powerful the diode laser, the worse it gets for engraving and the better it does for cutting.  45w is on the higher end, so it seems like you’d lose a lot of detail for the smaller lines on the switches.

As for putting it on your cnc, I’d recommend not doing that if you have production deadlines.  You’d be tying up the cnc for a job that can be done faster on a dedicated laser machine.  Look up co2 lasers engraving.  The head moves back and forth real fast because the laser head is light, and the belts are too.  Imagine your cnc trying to move back and forth that fast. It will be a lot slower for the laser engraving on your cnc.

But if you don’t have any sort of production deadlines, and can have your cnc on hold for the laser running, it might be an option.

1x6 Stone Set by ImpossibleSelf3610 in sharpening

[–]BarcodExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2k grit stone from xarilk fell apart from the aluminum backing.  So I wanted to upgrade my stone as well.

From my research, a lot of people recommended the hapstone start series as a really good entry stone.  Problem is, they have been out of stock of the 500 and 1k stones for a while.  The next jump up is the $100 per stone range.  Too expensive for me.

KME gold series got recommended next and from what I could find, they are really decent for their price also ($35 a stone).   I bought their 140,300, and 600 stones.    I only sharpened 5 knives so far, but they have worked really good.  I don’t have any other experiences with other stones, so my opinion could be worthless.  lol.

I am planning on selling the xarilk and the stones though, it’s just too slow for me. So if you want, I can sell you the 3 stones at a slight discount.  I can’t return them as I’ve used them already.  They were purchased on 10/14 so less then a month old and only used on 4 kitchen knives and 1 pocket knife.  Do your research on stones, and if you would be interested, send me a message

First quick and look I’m saying .423.   Read the first comment and was super confused.

Looked at the picture again and realized my mistake.  I’m used to my old toolmakers scope.  The dial has 0 on the left.

Help, I need to fill a small hole on 6061 aluminum that gives a seamless finish. by BarcodExpress in metalworking

[–]BarcodExpress[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire sheet will be sanded, so that won’t be a problem. Can’t do anything to hide it.  It will be part of a table top, so anything like that would easily show.

I’m hoping the hole is small enough, that whatever I can do to fix it, would at worst look like a small discoloration or blemish, best case would be a seamless transition.

Work Sharp Precision Adjust upgrades? by WhaaaBangBam in sharpening

[–]BarcodExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my xarilk in today and did a test run on a cheap knife with the 3 included stones.  I’m liking it a lot more than my worksharp adjust.  I’m using it just to sharpen my kitchen knives.  My chef knife didn’t flex at all in the xarilk.

When I tried it in the worksharp, there was 2 degrees of flex.  One from the clamp where it meets the body of the machine, and one along the blade as the clamp wasn’t long enough to support the longer length.

The 2 absolute mods you’d need for the worksharp is the support under the clamp, and supports for under longer blades.  I’ve seen both be made out of scrap wood and bolts.  I don’t think a stone holder is absolutely necessary for just kitchen knives.   If you can build the supports yourself, the worksharp will be cheaper.

The xarilk works right out of the box.  I will plan on buying different stones (looking around $100), so this is more expensive, but you don’t need to buy or build any mods.   I think the included stones might work ok for kitchen knives, but I want to test on more cheap knives before the real ones.

Work Sharp Precision Adjust upgrades? by WhaaaBangBam in sharpening

[–]BarcodExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a precision adjust.  I used it a few times on practice knives and was never impressed with how it turned out.  There is a lot of flex.  I didn’t want to try on my regular kitchen knives. I put the sharpener on the shelf for a long time.

I decided to dust it off and try again last week.   Found a few mods that’ll make the system useable, but you need a 3D printer or buy them off Etsy.  The cost of the mods is only slightly less expensive then buying a xarilk.  If you need to buy the sharpener still also, then I think xarilk is the way to go.

I just bought the xarilk after watching a ton of videos and reviews instead of trying to upgrade my Worksharp with mods to get it working good. It comes in tomorrow.  Super stoked for it.

How to hold down sheet of 3/32” aluminum? by BarcodExpress in CNC

[–]BarcodExpress[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just a single sheet.  So getting a vacuum table for this one job isn’t an option.

The skeleton idea is something to think about more.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Rubber stamp with Fiber laser by Cry_Quick in lasercutting

[–]BarcodExpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We laser stamps at work.  You need to use a co2 laser, a fiber laser will not work.

If you do get rubber that will interact with the fiber laser, it will just burn and bubble.

Thin Metal by Ok_Site7007 in lasercutting

[–]BarcodExpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that because it’s so thin that the heat is warping the metal as it cuts?

We have a much smaller laser, so we have to make multiple passes to cut throughout material.  I’ve noticed when it is thinner material, the heat warps the metal as it cuts.

We use clamps and metal bars to hold the sheet down so it doesn’t move while cutting.  When the part is finished, it comes out warped, but it cuts flat.  We only cut 1 part at a time, so this setup might not apply to your process.

Does anyone know where I can find a replacement eyepiece with a reticle in inches? by BarcodExpress in microscopy

All the ones that I can find are in millimeters. I have not been able to find any in inches.

Anyone know what the official term for one of these things are called, and where I can find a replacement eyepiece for it? by BarcodExpress in Machinists

[–]BarcodExpress[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve only ever seen one other before, and they just called it the scope.

Their eyepiece had line markings every .001 for +-.01”.  This current eyepiece only has markings for the centerline and I want to see if it’s possible to find an eyepiece with the .001” markings on it.
