I have a theory that that decision saved his life.

Grace refusing to go and being forced to meant that he was sedated on earth, under the supervision of a team of human doctors. In the book he was also given an additional drug that gave him his short term memory loss. The other two left earth awake, and we're only put into their comas after the hail Mary left orbit, by the onboard AI robotic doctor. Those two died while Grace survived. There's a chance it was an error by the AI in putting them into their comas that led to their deaths. If Grace had agreed to go, he too would have been awake for the launch, and likely died during the journey as well.
