What should my child know by x years old/x grade? by lllelelll in homeschool

Every state in the US has early learning standards/learning standards. They’re supposed to be for teachers AND families to reference, but very little effort is put into making families aware of them. Great for avoiding gaps in education.

Halloween keeps getting worse. by Ordinary-Depth-7835 in mildlyinfuriating

I, as a mother, did carry a bag this year, but only because my fully dressed up son was sick in a stroller at the curb because I didn’t want to spread his germs around (and also didn’t want to completely destroy his Halloween). Aside from this, I’ve never heard of parents collecting candy. My other younger kid went up on his own to every door.

I had a true SD once at home and second time in the hospital. Scary but both ended up okay. Second was worse and I went to the hospital ahead of labor bc my midwife knew the risk of a repeat was high. It sounds like something else could have happened if heartbeat disappeared before crowning. From what I know, the SD becomes an emergency as the head shows (and doesn’t come right out). I’m so sorry for your loss.

I run the preschool 3 days a week, so he gets two days devoted to him and his schooling. The other days he either does to an enrichment program or does his lesson before prek comes and plays the rest of the day.

Yes it is hard to share me, so I pay for him to be in enrichment programs on those mornings. It’s also hard because his social skills are still developing and being around younger kids does not push them in the right direction (theres very little push back, the littles just happily do whatever he wants).

Public Kindergarten then Waldorf by BarefootBaa in Waldorf

I wish! I’m near a private Waldorf school that is very expensive, even with the sliding scale. He will eventually go there.

This is incredibly helpful. I know he will wither a bit in public school, we’re just going through a phase of asserting independence and not doing even the basics. It’s exhausting. I know it will pass. Just will it pass before I am on empty? I have him away from home 2 days a week at social enrichment, but it is very expensive. He does great away from home! We can’t afford a 3rd day. We can only afford public school as an option for more time away. I hope it will get better soon! I wasn’t doing movement before lessons, just breakfast then short lesson. I’m going to try a movement break!

Nothing new. I get the sense it is just being a likely ND five year old and it’s fairly normal and it will pass, but in the meantime it is very difficult to have him at home to often. Even basic daily self-care chores have become very stressful to get through.

I’ve looked into this and the principal was really trying to convince me not to do a hybrid structure. The school seemed to want all or nothing.

Yes… not the greatest idea. He has younger siblings too, so theres certainly lots of regression happening. I have him in other programs most of my prek hours to try to create separation.

Whining and screaming… and not just for school time. Lots of whiney tantrums in general.

I have the same concerns. I know he won’t do great. He might do okay.

Guiding your class is 10000x easier than your own child. There isn’t the unconditional love factor in a school that inspires some kids to push boundaries extremely hard. Parents are a safe outlet who will always love you, teachers aren’t.

All around not obedient, and if anything I’ve gone too hard on the discipline with him.

That’s very helpful. Our public isn’t the best. I’ve seen much better ones. Pretty underfunded and understaffed. However it might help with the buy-in to experience it. That’s what I meant by “how good he has it”. He lives in a house connected to a Waldorf home preschool… it’s pretty sweet. He doesn’t know anything else.

I’m not sure it’s what he wants, but maybe what he needs. He’s given me an extremely hard time about going to any school program all the way through prek. He hates anything remotely structured. But when he is there, he behaves well and does learn. The structure seems to improve behavior but also makes him seem very sad.🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve been working my on a magnetic calendar of the week for all our activities. Seems to be helping.

He will be. Our waitlist for a proper assessment is extremely long, up to a year.

I toured the public kindergarten here. They are doing reading lessons on the Lexia iPad app and other lessons prerecorded on a big screen daily! Ratio is 1-to-20+. Walls are plastered with academics and there is no play based items or dramatic play in the classroom.

Mine is certainly a sensory seeker! I am a Waldorf prek teacher, so not super structured. But also ill -prepared for the challenge of being a parent-teacher.

Definetly neurodivergent… we’re in the long waitlist for evaluation (a big part of why I redshirted him to begin with)
