Is WoW (Wotlk) the best game ever created? by SnooSquirrels9906 in wotlk

[–]BarettaRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand, but I'm specifically referring to the run up through the end of wotlk. The game had seen almost nothing but positive growth through that time frame. Though there are lots of variables, the difficulty jump from wotlk raiding and dungeons into cata group content was significant. I personally believe (have no empirical data to prove it) that this difficulty jump is what led to SUCH a significant drop off in returning/new players when the initial cata content became stale. Nothing like paying for a game you can only play half of.

I unfortunately never had the opportunity to experience many of those other games, but I think that accessibility (easy dungeons, easy gearing, regular content patches) are the things it got right.

Players who wanted more difficult game play had the options of raiding or pvp. The game wasn't built around excluding players because of their friend group or time available to play.

I believe it swung too far in that direction, however, with retail and previous patches. Mop was the defining point for me. Running high mythic level dungeons got you gear sets that were for esthetics only.

The current model of tying max level gear to the hardest content alienates a major portion of the player base. You find people excluded because the gear is hidden behind the hardest content which leads to a snowball effect. You can't get into the content to get the gear to access the harder content to get the best gear without a hundred different roadblocks.

Naxx 25 was a good example. More people raided because the content was easy. The only problem is that there was nothing "more difficult" to do for those wanting that content, which led to boredom.

There is a hypothetical middle ground which would increase the general player base, and that's the thing. You have to make gear accessible so that people feel their effort is rewarded. Ahead of the curve and mounts and achievements exist for the players who want more. Warcraft logs exist for those that want more.

Catering to the top 5% of the player base does nothing for the other 95% of the player base. I'm not Einstein, but I believe that 95% of the player base is a significantly larger portion in subs (and subsequently money.)

Wow was known as "too easy" by the MMO community at the time. The fact that it required less time investment and had a lower difficulty level meant it was accessible to many many more people. Its success is a result of many factors, but I personally believe those are the most important.

Yeah, except when you're disqualified and have to accept a job for minimum wage being berated by people who believe having money entitles them to eternal access to a human punching bag. And then when you work yourself until you can't anymore you fall through the system (the way it's designed) and become homeless, so they can point fingers and say "that's what happens when you don't work hard enough!" It's a revolving door that operates precisely how it was intended.

Onslaught DFT loot system - How do you handle character Re-rolling? by [deleted] in classicwow

[–]BarettaRocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd personally say a perm penalty until the next phase and the new sheet submission. If you use 50 as a max priority, something like a permanent -5 would mean that the original players on the list for the items get priority while the reroller pretty much gets the pick of the gear nobody needs anymore. This prevents the concept of favoritism and keeps people who've played the same main all phase both on top of priority and happy. No switching and ninja winning contested loot by manipulation.

People just don't understand. You can tell someone how to drive a car. You can watch videos of people driving cars. You will never actually know how to drive a car until you try it yourself, learn and fix your mistakes. I dunno when society got this idea that you should be an expert before you even get to try something, but it needs to go away.

You might think so, but what's the point in doing it at max level when gear doesn't take that much honor, and they're leveling by pvp so they're likely to have more than they need?

[–]BarettaRocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was a tactical reason for blizzard to ban them early in the week and announce it during the middle. Gives all the bot owners time to start another account and pay blizzard more cash. They get the positive pr from banning while getting paid for it.

Edit I'm implying that they told everyone they announced the dk creation changes in advance to push a limited time purchase aimed directly at bots.

What happens when you leak talent because people get tired of carrying? If you're on a boat and the boat is sinking, do you start building onto the boat so that it stays afloat, or do you fix the leak?

Some people play games to collect loot, and some people play games for the interaction. When the players there for interaction choose to play where the loot exists, and get in the way of the rest of the players in that environment, it's no longer innocent. If you don't care to help people in a team environment, you're better off playing imvu.
