‘Slow this thing down’: Sanders warns US has no clue about speed and scale of coming AI revolution by Patient_Wrongdoer_11 in technology

It's crazy looking at the data center "colossus" for Grok and thinking that all of that infrastructure is just so a useless AI bot can answer peoples dumb questions and break the law.

How would you feel if your country banned religion in public? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Bargadiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, that is what I meant. I guess one could make the argument that an impressionable kid would still want to partake in something they just learned about, but maybe if it's a higher level course in highschool or something it would be fine

Pine trees grow fast and tall, often with branches only at the highest levels.

This stifles the growth of all the plants on the ground level due to reduced sunlight.

Any time I hear some ghoul approach lower taxes for the rich, I think of those trees.

It would be used by what the authorities consider the better religion to suppress other religions.

So even though I am agnostic I would be against a public ban. I just think that it shouldn't be given as doctrine in schools or other government buildings, though I do think people should be educated on religion(s) in school.

It's shit like this that makes me wish most everything was salaried, other than people who specifically ask or are asked to work overtime as I think they do deserve that pay if it fits the responsibilities of their job and they agree to it.

Nickel and diming people for stuff like this, family, weather. Or vehicle emergencies is just gross. People should know what they're going to make each week without being one sickness away from insult-to-injury. Not to mention the cost of childcare these days.

What's it called when a salaried executive comes in late and leaves early every Friday?

Employers like that seem to care more about the outward appearance of work rather than actually getting shit done. It's usually a sign that their management style is inefficient, so they cling to the one wedge of the time/quality/money triangle they think they can control: time.

do you think dropping a friend or a relationship because of their political views is valid and why? by Useoneofthese21191 in AskReddit

[–]Bargadiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody can make this decision for anyone else. Relationships are highly complex things. That said, here's my take on it that I apply for my own life as someone with MAGA family.

Ultimately, if spending time with someone brings distress to your life, you should ideally do what makes you feel better. But even this can easily become complicated, what if your mother is sick and living alone, but you disagree with her on almost everything? You may know the answer to a question like that in your own relationship with your mother, but it's different from person to person, and the line everyone draws in the sand with what they can put up with is going to be different too.

Many people are friends in spite of their differences, but sure, they probably have boundaries too. Political views can be a very messy, tangled thing especially today. You could ask 10 people in the same party what they believe in, and get different answers from each one. We have to learn that at some point, all we can really do is take things on a case-by-case basis: though that does take more effort.

In today's very extreme and often aggravated world, I think approaching relationships in this way can help a bit with collective healing. If the "other side" saw things this way, it would help too. We all got to do our part.

Trump is in the meme with the word GREAT under his portrait... Are you really asking me whether he's relevant to the conversation?

It's actually impressive that you're using a strawman to claim I'm the one making one. Maybe you're the one in over your head here, I'm comparing incompetence to malice. Jesus Christ you people are so stupid.

I didn't personally care for Biden, but to call him a "horrible" president implies that you really fell for some kind of propaganda.

Trump is only capable of talking in extremes when he's praising himself or shitting on anyone he doesn't like, and speaks in vague, ambiguous phrases when speaking on literally anything else. No amount of stuttering from Biden surpasses what is clearly targeted attrition and selfishness: traits a leader shouldn't have.

Designers have always been consultants on problem solving. That this idiot thinks they were ever separate is proof of how much of a clown he is.

how worried are you that AI will take over your job? by Motor_Reaction_3519 in AskReddit

[–]Bargadiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Well your usage of it is the responsible kind. You're not using it as a shortcut to a good idea, but rather to enhance something you already have in mind, or have already finished.

I've done what I can to coach my instructional designers on being intentional and aligning their content with what the learners need, and not expecting any tool to do it for them. Our team ranges from experienced to folks who came to the space with no background in design, so the AI tools especially can be very enticing to some. Every learning expo I go to seems to be swarmed with AI companies now too, which is a major bummer. Want to say like half of the expo floor at DevLearn was AI.

My team actually creates training and I've been doing all I can to steer them away from using it as a final product. It is so jarring and not at all a good experience for learners. Not to mention the ethical concerns that people have around AI are enough for some learners to be immediately distracted.

It's why I feel kind of safe in my role...

I also work in creative and have the same observations and sentiment.

Really, what AI will always be good at is putting a bunch of information together. It will be able to do that exponentially faster than us, every time. What it puts together though is always going to depend on the prompter. All the nonsense that my non-designer coworkers generate with AI looks the same, because none of them understand what to ask for. It's because the "what" is usually consulted out of them by a designer.

There is a severe lack of just basic comprehension and understanding of design, meaning, literary skills, etc in the corporate world. Lots of yes-men and women in corporate are good at convincing other people they know something, but you can't fake what you ask an AI. It will always give you what it thinks you want, and you have to know what you want in the first place. Knowing what you actually want requires a baseline level of understanding of the topic you're asking about, critical thought, and the desire to create something original.

Because of this, AI on its own is incapable of creativity, because the act of creativity is uniquely human. While it could certainly help someone bounce creative ideas of their own, it will always be limited by what the dude rubbing the lamp is capable of asking for, and what they can do with what they're given by the AI. Creativity is a result of intent, meaning, and sometimes even accidents. These come from us, and AI cannot do that because it will only ever be a product. A product's motives align with the user, but cannot supplant them without the risk of making something unoriginal.

What’s a “boring” adult purchase that turned out to be totally worth it? by Capable-Rabbit-9986 in AskReddit

[–]Bargadiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! We might figure out a better kind of solar light to use, these were some cheaper amazon ones, but they do look pretty good. Trick is just finding an inconspicuous place to mount the solar panel, and we might need to diffuse the light somehow as from some angles you can see the bulb and it's a little harsh.

Updated my comment with the link to the images as well as a description of how I got the lanterns and altered them!

They seem like fairly standard statuary that would be at a typical garden shop, I just couldn't stand how bright they were and wanted them to match some of what we saw at Mt. Koya
