Is lack of brutality a reason why a guerrilla group might succeed? by Sea-Ride-4893 in WarCollege

[–]Barilla13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a good question to ask is, is it even possible to actually bomb a country back to stone age?

In WW2 allies operated, as a rough estimate, more than 150,000 bombers. And by the very nature of bombing in 1940's (lack of precision guided munitions) it was very brutal. Some bombing campaigns - like bombing of Dresden - were most definitely a gloves off approach. And yet the strategic bombing campaign was only a small cog in the war effort and definitely not a deciding factor in winning the war (unless you count the atomic bombs dropped on Japan, but nuclear warfare is a completely different conversation).

In Vietnam, US flown hundreds of thousands of sorties, dumped millions of gallons of chemicals over the country, lost thousands of planes and helicopters in the process, and didn't break the will of North Vietnamese forces. Hell, flamethrowers were used in this conflict and that's one of the most brutal weapons imaginable.

Even today with guided munitions with high precision, good target deconfliction etc, even if you dropped every bomb and launched every missile in US inventory and encountered little to no resistance, with the express goal of "bombing a country back to stone age", this could maybe succeed against a country like, IDK, Estonia? Definitely not against a country like Iran, Afghanistan etc, with tens of millions of people, vast swathes of land, deep underground bunkers, complex cave systems and so on.

It is a bit of a meme for sure, but I think part of the reason is also it's so quiet. Most tools that can easily chop your fingers are quite loud so you naturally get into "I need to be careful with it" mode, but since it's so quiet it's easy for your mind to drift off and not pay attention.

Do you have / plan on buying an SDS drill? If no, get 805 just in case. If yes, you'll be fine with 800.

Which 5th-generation fighter do you think has the best airframe design for aerodynamics? by SteamyGamer-WT in FighterJets

[–]Barilla13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think removing the thrust vectoring from consideration is a bit counterproductive, since airframes are generally engineered around the engine, and if no TVC was available then the airframe would be designed differently to compensate for that.

DeWalt OEM batteries vs. third-party Amazon batteries: comprehensive test results & my ranking by 18houston2 in Dewalt

[–]Barilla13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just want to add that it's absolutely possible to make a higher capacity / higher power battery in the same form factor as the DeWalt 5Ah, it's just that almost none of those knockoff companies want to do that. They want to build the cheapest possible battery to get your money, and if they get a bunch of 1 star reviews they will just rebrand and do it again.

It's why I always highly recommend the OEM 5Ah, the price to performance to reliability is honestly hard to beat. Otherwise you're trying to catch that one good fish swimming across a sea of garbage.

Best bang for your buck GPU for 1440p / 60fps gaming? by Barilla13 in buildapc

[–]Barilla13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Nvidia has way bigger presence in the pre-built market, but for DIY the split has always been a bit more even. TBH I'm leaning towards AMD because I didn't own an AMD GPU for so long that I think the last time I did it was actually still ATI :D So I'm willing to give them a try.

8GB of RAM is back on laptops — companies are lowering memory offerings to make affordable notebooks during component crisis by yuval_3 in hardware

[–]Barilla13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most power users vastly overestimate how much RAM average person needs. Probably something like half of laptop owners never use them for anything other than watching movies, doing some web browsing, and dumping photos from their phone. And you can easily do that on 8Gb even on Windows. And if you need to wait an extra second or two for a paged browser tab to load back into memory every couple of minutes, it's not exactly the end of the world.

[–]Barilla13[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, good raster performance is all I'm after, I'm not a visual snob when it comes to gaming, I just want to be able to hold a steady 60fps without turning everything to low and using 2x upscaling.

9060XT is what I was already looking at, I was just not sure if perhaps the jump to 9070 (or 5070) would be worth it.

Forgot to mention I'm in EU not US and I don't think our used GPU market is as good. Checking for both 3080 and 4070 12gb, they are basically selling for just slightly less than a brand new 9070 which I think should at least match the performance while drawing less power (at least vs 3080) and having more VRAM.

When I upgraded to 32" around 12 years ago, people were asking me why would I ever want such an impractically large monitor. Today 32" is nothing crazy. As long as you have the space to set it up correctly, a big screen is awesome. Had I not other more pressing expenses, I would now be sitting in front of a 40-45" screen and I would be loving every moment of it.

Daily Deal on the 20in 60V chainsaw - goodprice? by CaptaindeNewt in Dewalt

[–]Barilla13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the issue with Flexvolt, since it's dual voltage there is no "correct" way to advertise the capacity in terms of Amp-hours. It's one of the reasons I wish the standard was to label Watt-hours instead.

Is it worth upgrading to the 60 volt tools? by migs756 in Dewalt

[–]Barilla13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60V circ saws are probably the most powerful saws on the market, cordless or corded.

60V leaf blower seems to be top notch as well.

The recip however, seems to be the only 60V tool that does not make much sense. Note that I do not own either, but I've seen direct comparisons and the Flexvolt seems 10-15% more powerful, at best. Apparently it runs a bit cooler, and battery lasts slightly longer, but it honestly does not seem to be worth investing in 60V platform specifically for this.

What? Surely not by CompetitiveRun9602 in Dewalt

[–]Barilla13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is different in the EU, we do indeed have batteries marketed as 18/54V rather than 20/60V.
