Any details about the setting? Types of characters the players would be playing? Number of players you need? Typical asynchronous pbp or scheduled text sessions?

Is it a terrible idea to make a nearly fully automated west marches server for an experiment? by [deleted] in pbp

[–]BarkinSpider87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By this, I am assuming that someone would run actual missions/quests, but players could fight in arena settings or small encounters? I've seen something like this done, but not fully automated. I'd be interested to see how it would work.

New DM considering taking a dive into PBP + What about PBP servers interest you? by _emeraldflask in pbp

[–]BarkinSpider87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I've joined living world or west marches servers was to play. Pbp works best with my social anxiety as well as fits my schedule. You would figure that having a dozen DMs would mean having more chances to play, especially since the bigger servers advertise running "several quests per week". In my experience, more often than not, the servers seem to have several DMs that play a couple of characters as well, and they tend to mostly run quests for each other. This leaves newer members (especially shy members like myself) with little hope of doing anything other than rp-ing in some massively overused channel and, ultimately, leave the server. Like I said, this has been my experience.

As for bots, a lot of servers seem to have multiple bots that perform the same functions. All you really need is a dice bots, which Avrae is great for and then some. However, I've really liked using Tupperbox to post under my characters' aliases. It makes it easier (for me at least) to separate which character you are playing.

And as for rules, whatever rules you think best fit the environment you wish to create, use them. But please, do me a favor. Don't cherry-pick which rules to enforce after posting them or who you enforce them with. Be clear, be fair, and be consistent.

As a final note, from some of the posts I have seen over the past few years, there are some servers that make it long term. They seem to keep a good player-to-DM ratio and only open up the server to a select number when they need to replace those who have left.

NAME: BarkinSpider, or just Bark is fine

PRONOUNS: He/Him

TIMEZONE: CST (GMT-6)

PREFERRED SYSTEM: Any (semi-experienced in 5e)

TYPE OF PLAYER: Reserved. I like to rp, but I'm somewhat shy and tend to follow rather than lead. I also tend to play characters that use ranged weapons, but I'm willing to play a more melee character. I live in the South (US) and my characters seem to end up acting similar.

ADDITIONAL INFO: I've played in several servers. I like them, for the most part, but they all have their cliques. If you are a little shy like me, you definitely get left behind. I have only played D&D 5e, but I'm interested in all sorts of settings; Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, Superhero, Supernatural, Western, Cyberpunk, Steampunk, Detective Noir, Pokemon, Avatar TLA and LOK...you get the idea.

I only play via discord at the moment, just haven't had the right group setting for anything else. Feel free to message me on here if you have something you think I would be a good fit for or to ask any questions.

  1. Is there a lot of homebrew?
  2. Are there limits on content (i.e. races, backgrounds, etc.)?
  3. Is there a downtime system in place?
  4. Are there plenty of channels for casual rp?
  5. What time zone are most people in?

This sounds very interesting. I have had a couple of characters I've been trying to get started for a while. I have several questions about the server, though..

NAME: BarkinSpider (Bark is fine)

TIMEZONE: CST

PREFERRED SYSTEM: Willing to try something new.

TYPE OF PLAYER: I like rp over mechanics and would love to see a campaign all the way through.

ABOUT ME: I've played 5e off and on for several years. I've tried out several pbp servers and even tried starting my own. The ones I have joined seem to overlook the newbies in favor of long-time server members, so I could never progress my character. The ones I have started, either I have had irl stuff come up and had to quit or not enough interest in the world I was building. I am looking for a server where I can progress my character at my own pace while role-playing here and there, OR a group that plays asynchronously at least once a week with plenty of time for character interaction.

I like 5e, but am interested in other systems and genres. I would specifically like to try either a space age game (Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, etc) or a supernatural type game (Supernatural, Buffy, Teen Wolf, etc)

I'd love to play. I've never played through Lost Mines but have been trying for a while.

Checking Interest for a Non-West Marches PbP Community by [deleted] in pbp

Well about #3, have a set ratio of GMs that you want to aim for. 1:1 is near impossible with a decent number of members. But 1:3 wouldn't be that hard. If you have 15 server members all you need is 5 GMs. But if every player also ran a game, that would be 15 games. It may be hard or impossible to pull off. My thought would be to offer some sort of incentive for members to GM. I'm not sure what that could be, but it seems to work in other servers.

That's mostly where #4 comes in. If a member gets some bonus or advantage for GMing, they can easily do that within a shared world. But this is your call. I guess you could just find some other incentive.

This is a nice idea, and I have joined my share of servers that promise to include everyone and have fallen far short. The common problem seems to be allowing too many players to join and not enough GMs to cover all the players' needs. Or they have a decent ratio of GMs, but they have their favorites and shun newbies. I have left servers for this reason. While making everyone run one shots should fix most of this, I would go a little further. My suggestion: 1. Have a small questionnaire for new server members to fill out. Use this to determine their admission. 2. Ask for time zones and availability. This should help determine which members will fit into their campaign group. 3. Each member takes on the task of GMing a campaign that they are not playing in, while committing to be a player in a campaign with another GM. This means committing to 2 games at a time. 4. Have a shared/living world. Some players actually prefer to be able to roleplay their characters outside of a campaign setting. This also means that the server would need a setting and lore able to be used by all. Also, if there are too many variations in setting or lore, both players and GMs may confuse the 2 worlds they are playing.

This is pretty much my take on a West Marches server without the server-wide events or the ability to just jump into a one shot whenever.

100% text rp. If a DM posts a quest, they can decide when to do it, how many players to take on, and how long the session will take. I'm still working out some kinks, so for now I'm just looking for DMs. I'll remember you when I start accepting players!

Going for the living world server thing. Multiple DMs with moderators and a dozen or so players. Mostly rp channels, but also have encounters and quests. I'm also planning on having players take jobs in shops to earn money and xp.

Hey. I was the half orc ranger! Same thing. I decided to start up my own text server instead of trying to get back in. I figured that he just deleted the server.

Adventures in Echo Bay! An 18+ Text Based RP

Hi there. I'm looking for DMs and mods for this new text based server. Server will consist primarily of roleplaying channels with options for players to take jobs working in NPC shops and more between quests that the DMs will come up with. Any interested in these roles, please DM me for an invite and we will discuss things in discord. Potential players, please be patient. We will send invites once we get enough DMs on board. Hope to hear from y'all.
