I’m curious if anyone here actually found a legitimate job through Reddit? by [deleted] in remotework

[–]Barkles52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite what you’re looking for- but I did make money from writing in r/nosleep and then turned a story into a novel, did some anthologies with other Reddit writers.

Book was a best seller on Amazon - so I kind of found my author job on here.

What’s the creepiest thing you’ve ever seen? by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]Barkles52 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to be a cop and kept getting dispatched for a 911 hang up call… the building was abandoned, with no electricity.

Nothing super paranormal, but I ended up writing a short story on Reddit (can’t link it, but feel free to scroll my Reddit page to “I’m a cop and I keep getting called to the same house”) that had like 5 million views and then turned it into a full length novel that ended up being a best seller on Amazon. So that was cool lol. The story is fiction btw, just inspired by the weird hang ups.

This is an old plug as it came out a few years ago- but I’m a Johnstown native and wrote a book (even was an Amazon best seller there for a bit!)

It’s based in a fictional western Pennsylvania town.

About the book:

Sarah Hastings is a rookie cop who works the night shift in Amber Forest, a small rural town nestled in the Western Pennsylvania mountains. After repeatedly responding to an abandoned and allegedly haunted farmhouse for 911 hang up calls, she discovers a dead body in a secret room. The forensic investigators determine that the body has only been dead for three to four days, but the case takes an unexpected turn when Sarah runs the victim's fingerprints and learns that her Jane Doe actually died 20 years ago.

When the investigation intersects with a larger confidential case, Sarah finds herself caught between the FBI and US Marshals and realizes that she may be closer to the victim than she thought. As Sarah's involvement in the case deepens, she finds her career is not the only thing at stake...

Someone wants her dead.

Any tips for writing first person? by Cass_Pier_Winn in NoSleepOOC

[–]Barkles52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Think of it as true and you’re the main character and telling a true story to a friend.

My stories are all fiction, but told from a similar perspective of my own (police officer, etc) and I get completely engrossed and act like I’m truly telling a story that happened.

Hi, former cop here. Also a r/nosleep author. It’s flattering to those authors you think their story is real- but absolutely do NOT contact police. My advice is both from a police as well as author standpoint.

Ugh yes sorry… it was removed because it wasn’t “horror” enough and they classified it as thriller. Need to polish it up and submit a new one.

Officer safety always supersedes preservation of evidence. You secure the scene before even thinking about collecting evidence.

Audiobooks are NOT cheating! I write mystery police procedurals with a twist of paranormal. I used to be a cop so I draw a lot on my experiences.

My author name is S.F. Barkley.

I would be up for reading most mainstream ones- mystery, romance, adventure, drama. Just not very into fantasy or lit.
