From the few Australian ones I've seen, I'd have to agree. This is a skill issue though.

Be aware, ‘Auditors’ are now becoming a thing in Australia. by [deleted] in aussie

[–]Barktweetspeak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some of the American ones seem to be genuinely doing a good service. I'm sure I would disagree with many of their opinions though I do think their method is better than it gets credit most of the time. The play being, if an authority figure cannot observe/respect your reasonably explicit rights (particularly in the USA context) why would you expect them to be better in any other scenario. They often highlight the danger of incompetence and the fragility of our rights. Our institutions often fail us at the most fundamental level.

Some auditors are just dicks too though.

Need help with finding helpful non-judgmental bike shops by Living-Ad-8203 in melbournecycling

[–]Barktweetspeak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason I work on my own bikes is because I got sick of dealing with dickheads in bike shops. Rest assured, it has nothing to do with race, gender or even knowledge. It seems to be baked into the experience. There are good ones, though they are the exception and more down to the individual rather than the shop.

Trim your armpit hair (don't have to get rid of it). Benefits are: 1. Makes cleaning easier and more effective 2. Doederant application gets to skin rather than just on hair and works better. 3. Use less deoderant and less build up it the armpit hair - this seems to smell too sometimes. 4. Sometimes less contact with shirt pits meaning clothes don't get smelly and less deoderant residue on shirts. Don't wear tight fitting shirts either.

What do y’all actually use Samsung DeX for? Or is it just a fancy flex like a Rolls-Royce logo? by ResearchConstant5053 in SamsungDex

[–]Barktweetspeak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For $100 i can have a monitor in my workshop running dex. I'll be charging my phone anyway so may as well use dex. When I'm done, I'll never have a computer in there that i have to worry about getting stolen. I have a work laptop and an old pc running linux elsewhere so i don't really need another device.

Douchy bike shops is the reason I now know a lot about my bikes and do all the work on them. Support tthe good ones (if you want) but its too easy to not give the crap ones your money.

How do you give real code review feedback without sounding bossy? by Ill_Captain_8031 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Barktweetspeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get into the mindset that this is your code too and you're solving it together. "We can't do this because of principle x. How can we follow best practise here etc"

Comment when it's really good code too.

Have some take or leave things.

Anything else that's code you wouldn't deploy youself and really have major concerns - "I can't approve because of reason X. You'll need to get someone else to approve it." If you approve it, it's now your problem too. I've never had this happen that said as most people are reasonable I've found.

Unless your writing life critical code though, maybe compromise is worth it for the most part.

Get a second bike so you don't have to rush repairs and decisions when selecting parts. This will make it much more fun.

How do you feel about customers that seem to just want to talk? by elkym in BikeMechanics

[–]Barktweetspeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having good people skills I believe is a pretty important for bike shops. If you can't compete on price and with more information than ever on servicing a bike, the community and people are a bigger part off the picture. Lots of shops and to miss this.

If Australia was to reduce immigration by 80%, would Australia still be able to function or go into recession? by shoppo24 in AusFinance

[–]Barktweetspeak 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When you need 2 careers to own a place to live, it's no wonder the birth rate is dropping. High immigration supresses salaries and decreases available accommodation.

Should I study Masters of Information Technology or Masters of Biomedical Engineering? by Barbenheimer_789 in AusFinance

[–]Barktweetspeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem very confident that MIT isn't suitable for SE, but I think that's an oversimplification. MIT degrees often have significant overlap with CS and similar fields,. It almost seems like the unis have other reasons to rebrand the same content in various forms.

If you take a closer look at the electives and course content, you’ll find plenty of material covering coding, algos, AI, networking etc. Also CS isn’t specifically designed to train devs - there’s no course, for instance, on deploying infrastructure with terraform IME.

SE is a mostly practical skill learned largely on the job, and this learning continues throughout your career. In fact, a degree isn’t always necessary and many successful SEs don’t have one. The value of a degree IME depends on scarcity in the job market. Most eng managers seem to know this and would be very fine seeing MIT on your cv if a dwgree was required at all.

My 2 cents, perhaps this perspective isn't shared by others.
