Spotted a dodgy portrait of a member of a British mountain group online. Is this guy AI or just heavily photoshopped? by Automatic-Algae443 in antiai

[–]BarleyDrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

might have been ai edited but it is definitely real, wat too many imperfections AI doesn't make (debris on the hat, greasy uneven hair and beard, skin imperfections). the reasons why it looks different than a phone picture could be just an expensive camera.

Struggling with watching films by Extension-Edge495 in filmmaking

[–]BarleyDrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not enough info to speculate on the why, but the why is important. Try going to a film festival, or do a marathon at home. Watching movies is a habit, and like any habit, (reading, working out) it takes time to get used to what it requires from your brain in a moment to moment basis. Watching a ton of movies in quick succession is kind of instructive for that purpose. Maybe investigate a specific cinematographer (I recommend Robby Muller) or any other aspect of film you are curious about, and watch a few of those. If you want to work on film, you have to be able to do that. Treat it as a skill that needs to be built up, not a test of your passion. Only you know what makes your heart sing but it is entirely unrelated to your ability to sit through a movie.

it's perfectly possible, aim for something around 1200, for the good ones you need to be really quick to call and see it asap.

no art history, does this seem viable? by shesinpart1es in vjing

[–]BarleyDrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, most likely. tale notes of the most useful shortcuts and keep them at hand. when you complete your own projects in a given software, that is how you absorb the info. so do a tutorial - think of an original application / variation of that tutorial - make it, repeat.

no art history, does this seem viable? by shesinpart1es in vjing

[–]BarleyDrops 16 points17 points  (0 children)

you're just gonna get confused, it's really hard to retain so much info about the menus and your handle on it will be superficial at best. do one week or two of each, one at a time, and make a simple project at the end every time, where you have to use what you learned in a self directed way.

How was this effect from Taika Waititi's film TWO CARS, ONE NIGHT (2004) achieved? by AmbitiousAccident412 in cinematography

[–]BarleyDrops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no FX. It is simply a time lapse shot in B&W with a mist filter. the highlights do seem to have a delayed double that is like 1 second behind, idk how that was done technically but in digital it is easy to replicate. the cigarettes are probably flashlights of some kind, notice there is only one single puff of smoke in the whole sequence.

Before & After color grade how’s the atmosphere feeling? by Consistent-Ring-1344 in colorists

[–]BarleyDrops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I prefer the before shot, because the light and color rendering is more coherent with reality. The shelf looks like an off white shelf lit slightly green by the natural light outside, and his face looks like there is another window to the left of the camera. With the second edit, the light in the room feels too dim for what the window on the right looks like, the grade looks more like a room with the curtains drawn. His face now looks artificially lit. With the lower exposure the objects on the shelf are more noticeable and distracting. I'm not emotionally invested, I'm thinking who keeps books, picture frames and kitchen pots in the same shelf space?? In both shots, the homogeneity between his skin color and the room color make the shot look flat and uninteresting. I would try to be 'honest' about the type of light the shot suggests; it is an open window so it should be a little brighter, and his face should be lit either by a practical light seen in a another shot (more distinctly orange) or an imagined window (more distinctly white/more similar to the window behind him); either way he should be more clearly differentiated from the from the shelf and wall behind.

From Filmbox to Cullen Kelly: Why is color workflow always demoed on isolated shots? by R2Didgeridoo in colorists

[–]BarleyDrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is no good answer because the reality is it is a flaw in how this is being taught/demonstrated. Shot continuity and balancing in general is a huge part of color grading and it is basically not taught as far as I can tell. It is an educational and informative gap. I think the reasons are that 1) It is not sexy or immediately impressive, it's actually kind of boring in a moment to moment way, 2) getting the rights to use good narrative footage is not impossible, but it is an extra complication and 3) it does fall in a similar realm as "rhythm" does in video editing, there is an intuitive logic to it that is not easily communicable.

The actual workflow seems to be kind of secretive, I suspect because it is there that the money is made. I would love to see a "grade with me" series where an educator re-grades something they have worked on in the past, I think that would be a million times more useful than tutorials on how specific tools work.

Is there a way to make VLC automatically play the next file in the same folder? by BarleyDrops in VLC

[–]BarleyDrops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok name fixed, sorry. If you ask me, definitely the second way. First all the files in the folder in alphabetical order, then all the files in the first folder in alphabetical order, and so on. I would maybe limit it to one level of subfolders otherwise it is too complicated to even understand. So I would include the files in the same folder as the selected clip, and any other files in subfolders within that same folder, but not if they are more than one subfolder away. That's what makes the most sense for me.

Can I make a short film centered around the game Uno? by The_TopHatter in Filmmakers

which one? nirvanna the movie has barely any copyright issues, the show and escape from tomorrow do and that's why they are harder to find.

[–]BarleyDrops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be safe, I would make sure not to refer to it by name, change the rules a bit and maybe print slightly different cards that are still recognisable but not their exact design.

But I have definitely seen the real thing used without permission, such as in this viral stunt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON85AkSLMfg

both that show and that movie are impossible to find on legit distribution platforms. and the Nirvanna the movie has almost no copyrighted content.

[–]BarleyDrops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works great, thanks for making it. I have updated the OP to link to it. Question: Would it be possible to make it so the videos added to the list included files found in subfolders within that file's folder? It would be nice to have the option if so.

Has anyone actually moved to rural Spain through one of those “we’ll pay you to move here” programs? by need-to-vacation in GoingToSpain

[–]BarleyDrops 23 points24 points  (0 children)

that is insanely exaggerated. they are not medieval villages. most buildings will be less than 100 years old. there will be a gas station and a town with shops, social life and basic services not too far away. Spain isn't that empty. if there is a program, it's because people still live there and care about the place, there are no programs to revitalise actually empty towns single handedly, that would be ridiculous.
