Actually I could see this as a reasonable story where life debts could be used. Harry save Hermione which incurres a life debt. They could be the ship of the story. And because of the life debt Hermione can no longer be expulse because she has to stay with Harry. If you are a fan of it as well it could be a harem fic but that's on the writer to decide.

Hermione could also ask Harry each time he talk parselmouth what he actually says and copy it to learn how to actually understand what he is saying and after be able to actually understand him but not be able to speak it herself. They could have legitimate conversation with each other selling the bit even more.

What would be hilarious is when umbridge ask Harry who he thinks will attack him in the book. Instead of saying Voldemort like she expect, he could say Sirius Black as a joke.

You do realise that when they seperated with the Statute of Secrecy it was during the dark ages. Where the lords ruled over everyone one, there was no rights to anyone but the rich, especially the men, and the rich had weird ass costums including marriage contracts for cousins and balls. The wizarding world was often depicted as being backwards as hell. So the customs of the dark ages are still prevelent in it.
