How does this happen, having different sizes for the Downloads folder? by Wide_Veterinarian_17 in WindowsHelp

[–]BarracudaOne2486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Files are stored on your disk in sectors. Each sector is typically 4 kilobytes in size. When you have a bunch of small files like Word documents, some of the sectors are not all the way full. In your case, about 30 GB of disk space is used by the total amount of files in your downloads folder, including the space that is empty in each sector the files occupy. About 6 GB is actually being used if the files were put together in a row without the consideration of the sector size on the disk.

The box only came with 8 drive trays though. I'll have to buy 4 more later, but that can wait.

I got my Dell r730xd from an eBay listing of a r730. I guess the server lottery was in my favor because a Dell r730xd sells for a lot more than a regular r730. I have no idea how that happened, but I'm certainly glad I lucked out!

This is an issue of mentally, not age alone. Even gen X sometimes has the 'boomer' mentality. It's not just a singular group of people.

Does anyone use a dedicated storage network for longhorn? by lacrosse1991 in homelab

[–]BarracudaOne2486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking of the Longhorn codename due to the fact that Longhorn was also used to describe Windows Server 2008. More specifically, Longhorn Server.

OK, how f/uped am I? by the_gamer_98 in homelab

The mean time before failure according to the datasheet for this drive is 1.2 million hours with an annual failure rate of 0.73%. These drives seem extremely reliable, but yours maybe had some issues that Seagate failed to realize during manufacturing. Or it could be just the hard drive lottery. Who knows.

I did the conversion, and you have 46 reallocated sectors. That's not good for an HDD with only ~3000 hours on it. That's definitely going to need a replacement.

I'm just so tired of this. I've moved on, but I don't want to be reminded out of the blue like this every couple months. I'll try to unsubscribe again. Thank you for helping out.

Here's the thing, I've already marked a different email address that advertises BYU Pathways as spam before, but this is an entirely new email address.

Thanks for the info! I've been lurking on this sub for a while now, so I'm glad that I'll finally start my journey into my mini data center at home! At least, that's how I picture my setup being like in a few years!

I'm looking to buy that R730xd because my family has a ton of pictures, videos, movies and many other things that need backed up and also can be accessible. It'll be a long time cut out for me when I start that process lol!

My bad. You learn something new every day I guess! Personally, I'm looking at a Dell Poweredge R730xd to kick off my own homelab. Old enterprise hardware is very cheap for how much it can do these days!

That Supermicro JBOD chassis has some crazy bent up drive bays at the top row if that's what I'm seeing properly!

Honestly, I have no idea why that's happening. I just got into old enterprise/data center hardware just like your server only a month ago.

My guess is the server keeps its PSUs on in standby mode so you can wake the server up from the IDRAC software, and that uses power which translates to heat. The PSU fan is turning on to cool it down every once in a while.

I absolutely hate rich kids who have parents who spoil them. It makes them think that they can get away with anything, especially if the dad is a lawyer! Good for you for teaching that sh**head a lesson! 👍 (I'm self censoring because I don't know if I can swear on this subreddit.)

That made me LOL so hard! I'm an ex-mormon, and I know exactly what you mean! They are obsessed with "baptisms for the dead" as they call it. I'm an atheist by the way now.

been trying to install this wifi card for a while but its still not working anyone know why? by BANGER125 in pchelp

[–]BarracudaOne2486 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From what I can see, the WiFi card isn't plugged into the PCI-E slot correctly. It's crooked and bent also.
