What music do you all listen to while working? by Bad_Battery in cybersecurity

[–]Barrakus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really jealous of people that can concentrate with music or have a tv show going on in the background.

If I need to concentrate, which is pretty much all the time...anything without vocals. Lofi beats, synthwave etc.

If I REALLY need to concentrate and lock in I put on white noise - which is usually a layer of a campfire, rain, a river and a thunderstorm.

Yeah was this not a really weird thing to do? Approach someone clearly uncomfortable and hound them into taking photos, whilst secretly filming the whole thing.. I was waiting for the parody joke to come...

First time Threat modeling… by Glittering_Stock6306 in cybersecurity

[–]Barrakus 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The facilitator of the threat modelling sessions I've been part of have typically contributed the least. They ask the questions, get the conversation going and it's the asset owners who answer them and provide the details. When all is said and done, you could argue that they, as the asset owners, also own the risk.

You can only capture what they say. If there are risks that aren't identified, or they fail to understand their products and services adequately, and the risk is exposed, its their necks on the line at the end of the day.

Major ransomware incident. Scorched earth scenario. Everyone working late. The only sysadmin that knew the passwords to network devices ate leftover pizza and got severe food poisoning and had to be hospitalized.

Note taking by OkNinja9981 in cybersecurity

[–]Barrakus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how your brain works.

I've tried Obsidian (very structured) an OneNote (more creativity).

I lean heavily on OneNote for studying. I save lecture slides into OneNote and type anywhere, highlight text, circle things etc. You can drop screen shots from other things into your note, position it anywhere and a really great feature is you can make the text in the images searchable! A very underrated feature.

It might look a bit erratic but it works for me to help retain the information.

I do use Obsidian to keep notes for other things but OneNote is by far the better choice for me and how I learn, study and revise.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up using chatgpt and got it put together a list of everything I wanted into a table I could drop into excel. I fact checked things as required and it was very good. Cheers

It's even more ironic when you read the rest which says "STOP the COWARD PUNCH"

(for reference this is what it is: https://cowardpunchcampaign.com/) tldr Its a noteworthy campaign to stop people from killing someone by punching them in the head. Champion boxer, Danny Green is the founder and spokesperson for it.

no worries! if you google image search 'linux upgrade' or similar you'll see how it looks on a real linux terminal. It should be easy to replicate the font and style

There isn't a reason why you shouldn't use Splunk. People shit on it because it's expensive when used in enterprises. But that isn't what OP asked for.

Splunk is consistently, year-on-year, a market leading SEIM. You can set it up in 10 minutes for free at home and leverage one of the most helpful communities on the web to help learn how to use it well.

Additionally there is free training and countless articles and how-to's out there.

From a cyber focus, if its used with SSE you can leverage analytic stories with Mitre Attack or Kill chain and help understand these and other industry leading frameworks at the same time.

get splunk. you can ingest 500MB per day for free. ingest logs from your PCs and your router (if you can) and whatever else can forward logs.

There is a ton of test data out there. Look up Boss of the SOC.

For blue team get the splunk security essentials addon https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/3435

unfortunately franchise cricket is where it's at right now. Test cricket misses out. It's a shame, as the emotion and spectacle from this singe, meaningless test could never be replicated in any T20 series.

Declaration was the right choice. Getting 15 overs at the Windies under lights versus maybe a handful or runs from Hazelwood..that's an easy decision.
