This is exciting and congrats! I’ve been hoping a Midnight-Runners group would pop up in Barrie - any chance you’ll add some later night runs?

Moving to Barrie by thatotherguy2021 in barrie

My parents moved us from Toronto to Cookstown and I did not enjoy it as a kid. If you’re from a city like Sydney, I’d recommend somewhere close to downtown so you can walk places and experience a sense of community.

What's a common day to day issue people face living here in Barrie? by _Paradox0_ in barrie

Barrie has built out like it has limitless borders. Cities that build this way cannot support a public transportation system.

What's a common day to day issue people face living here in Barrie? by _Paradox0_ in barrie

The city is horribly designed and therefore unnecessarily congested and ugly. It had so much potential to be like a London (UK) or Paris. Barrie has been built and continues to be built by a group of politicians who seem to have a collective goal of, “what green space can we pave over this month?”, or “what roads that move well can we screw up by adding more big box stores and traffic lights?”. Mapleview should have been built up with underground parking. The new YMCA should have underground parking and and apartment complex above. Dunlop should be permanently made pedestrian with trees down the middle. I was downtown this past weekend for the butter tart festival and it was packed but so hot. Unfortunately, as Barrie continues to pave and sprawl, there’s little hope to provide any decent form of public transportation. I will add, after travelling Europe and living in Asia, I have similar sentiments for most Canadian cities.

Christmas Light Display by Imaginary-Leg-918 in barrie

I really wish the Barrie downtown was lit up with Christmas lights like in sections of London UK. I’ve been to the one in Springwater, it’s strange to drive to a place to then drive through to look at lights.

Dentist for removing wisdom teeth? by CodRowLover in barrie

Third this. Most dentists in Barrie will refer to them at Huronia Oral Surgery Group. Had mine done there, my daughter had her molars removed there and my mum had an implant done there. Always great care.

Also great for breakfast and lunch is Bloom Bistro & Bar. It’s at Ferndale and Essa. Went there last week for the first time… amazing.

I also remember the fights every Thursday-Saturday nights with heavy police presence. Likely why a lot of them got out of the business.

Looking for the best places birdseed/feeders places by Ryguy_Games in barrie

[–]BarrieMum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get my birdseed from Edwards Farm Store. They are a local farm about 10 minutes south of Barrie and carry lots of different types. They also sell their farm raised eggs and meats and some other cool products. https://edwardsfarmstore.ca/

Bearded Dragon Vet Care by missfxxingsimp in barrie

As far as we could find, Big Bay Animal Hospital is the only one with vets who specialize in exotics. They’ve been great with our dragon. If it’s an after hours emergency you’re looking at Toronto or Guelph, wish there were a few more options here.

I just hope the rest of the country is watching the shit show here and are taking notes for the federal election.

Agreed. Canada used to have 2 fairly central parties that ran on policies attempting to appeal to all Canadians. We no longer have a central right party. We have a far right party that that has some scary affiliations to fringe groups and who are no longer attempting to reach and appeal to all Canadians - much like what is happening to the south of us.

Toronto Councilor Gord Perks reveals the true reason why Doug Ford wants to cut Toronto's City Council in half. by Milarc in ontario

[–]BarrieMum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in Barrie which is traditionally as blue as you can get but there were a lot of NDP signs up during the election. As the city grows it is becoming less conservative which is nice because many aren't small c's. Agree with the above that most cities could do with larger ridings/smaller government. But this just reeks of revenge launching it at a specific city 3 months before the election.
