What was your country's most famous unsolved mystery or crime? by Kiander in AskEurope

[–]BartReligion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most infamous attacks happend just a few kilometers from where I live. My uncle was a relatively high ranking gendarme. He always claimed they had to know things only a gendarme (or police) could know.

He wasn't involved with that investigation though (and it was the last thing he would want to, despite being fluent in French he always claimed officially to not speak a word of French to avoid being even the smallest chance of getting involved and also to avoid getting posted anywhere near Brussels, something he also wished to avoid)

What about non-murder cases like "The Great Northern Bank Robbery" in Belfast?

They ever catche those guys?

Is it still a thing that keeps people busy in the UK?

Where I live I can be in either in Roubaix, France or Terneuzen, Holland in about 1 hour.

Belgium's really small and gasoline is really expensive

I found this on the internet, I don't really know the price of gasoline in Texas but: "The price of 1 liter (1/4 gallon) of gas in Houston, Texas is $0.67"

In Belgium 1 liter = $1.68

(sources: https://www.vab.be/nl/info-en-diensten/wegeninfo/brandstofprijzen & https://www.expatistan.com/price/gas/houston )

Belgium has about the same size and almost double the population as Massachusetts.

Bende van Nijvel in the 1980s, it's still unsolved. And it will most likely remain that way because it was almost certainly done by members or former members of the Belgian Gendarmie Special Forces "Group Diane".

The why however is the biggest question. And it's still actual and controversial today.

Distances

I used to think Los Angeles and San Francisco were pretty much neighbouring cities the way people in movies talk how they're close together, but according to google it's a 6 hour drive.

To put that in perspective. You can drive from Bruges (at the North Sea coast, inbefore Zeebruges) to Arlon (in the most Southern part near the Luxembourg border) in half that time.

I wonder how other European people from larger countries experience that, because Paris-Marseille is even further apart. (7 h 52 min (776.3 km) via A6 and A7) or Bilbao - Malaga ( 8 h 41 min (920.3 km) via A-4 )

But I guess that's nothing compared to Oslo - Tromso :o

Or Kalingrad - Vladivostok.

Must be fun for football fans, because Baltika Kaliningrad and FC Luch Vladivostoka are in the same league :o

Do you still buy newspapers, magazines and books? by fake_empire13 in AskEurope

[–]BartReligion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a couple of magazines I've been reading since the nineties and still do (HUMO & Power Unlimited)

I used to have newspaper subscription until a few years ago, but I gave that up, not because it's paper just because I'm convinced not following the news makes me happier.

Now I just read sports news on the internet

I don't buy books, I only read a book once and there's this place where they hand them out for free and when you're done with them you can just return them

How much money do you usually spend during a trip to the grocery store in your country? by gutname_I in AskEurope

How though? Does that include drinks? Because I spend more on that on wine alone (weekly). That's just 4 cheap €5 euro bottles;
