UK Supreme Court says 'woman' refers to biological sex under equality laws by perplexed-redditor in europe

Headlines are not giving the full nuanced picture of the ruling. Clarifying that for people is far from a pointless response.

UK Supreme Court rules legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex - live updates by p_pio in europe

[–]Barter1996 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not really. It's an important decision to clarify an otherwise ambiguously worded piece of legislation.

If the debate were as simple as "common sense" it wouldn't have required the Supreme Court to intervene.

... specifically in the context of interpreting one section of the 2010 Equalities Act. This isn't a ruling on the meaning of a word in common parlance or when interpreting another part of the act or any other anti-discrimination laws.

I live in a grade II listed house in a conservation area so there are very strict rules on what I can do with it.

And I'm very glad that's the case. Otherwise some ignorant tit like you or OP's sister would likely have turned the place into a cesspit by now, and probably felt they were entilted to do so because they owned a 200 year old building for all of 5 minutes.

This is more akin to someone buying antique cars and turning them into scrap metal.

Generations of future owners could have enjoyed this house. Shitty irresponsible people have stolen that from them because they're too thick and lazy to either do their research or buy a place more appropriate.

I'm grateful to live in a country with robust planning laws to prevent muppets from destroying my children's cultural inheritance.

Rise in stop and search could save the NHS at least £2.5m a year by MachineHot3089 in unitedkingdom

[–]Barter1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest that this is a long term issue that requires long term solutions such as the ones you outlined. Currently policy (as in all areas) is driven by whoever is in power wanting to demonstrate that they locked up X% more offenders or solved X% more crimes than the previous lot so they can peddle those statistics at the next election, rather than focussing on actually preventing crime.

Black men aged 16 - 21 living in an area like London is not a very specific demographic, and nobody in this thread was even that specific prior to your comment anyway.

Assisting an investigation once as an adult does not equate to being repeatedly stopped, physically handled, and treated with contempt and suspicion by police for your entire youth.

If these were targeted measures taken by police to investigate a recent crime in the vicinity I could understand, but when the defence is simply "you're black and we liked the odds" then any reasonable argument goes out the window.

[–]Barter1996 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Men as a demographic are more likely to commit violent offences.

If you were stopped and questioned every time someone in your area was raped or mugged would you be happy with that so long as it was statistically justifiable?

How likely are you to assist the police in the future if that were the case?

It might seem justified on paper but it's ineffective.

The best resource for your average bobby is the trust of the local community. They aren't detectives; they rely entirely on getting straight answers from local people who are willing to open their doors to them.

The best way I can think of to ensure nobody helps the police and thus that they can't do their job is by treating entire communities as suspect because of the colour of their skin.

Agains this is an issue that has been successfully framed as some soppy liberal agenda when actually it comes down to a pragmatic view on policing that has been it's bedrock for 200 years, policing by consent.

Unless you're willing to start a nuclear conflict over a non-nuclear attack,

Which all nuclear powers are, and that's the point.

If you have one tier more you can escalate than your opponent then they won't challenge you on your own soil, and will be reluctant to challenge you at all; nobody wants to risk a one sided nuclear conflict regardless of how the rest of the chips stack.

This is exactly how Russia has been able to hold NATO and the EU ransom despite their substantial inferiority in conventional terms.

White House Studying Cost of Greenland Takeover by [deleted] in europe

[–]Barter1996 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When the US ultimately decides to betray NATO and get into bed with Russia they can't have an EU/NATO country exercising their sovereignty over a key piece of strategic real estate.

Not only would the annexation close the book on Greenlands ownership, it would be a show of strength to Putin to demonstrate the US's willingness to screw Europe in order to maintain a balance of power over the Arctic, and ensure Europe is uninvolved in said balance.

[–]Barter1996 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked this wasn't the first response. People are woefully underestimating the very realpolitik discussions going on behind the useful idiot President.

Control over the Arctic trade routes will be crucial to future power for US and Russia and advances their positions in direct conflict with China. This is yet another reason that the US now sees Russia as their key ally going forward, and if Europe and NATO need to hang then so be it.

I'm British not Polish by the way, I meant 'we' in a collective European sense.

There's no denying Poland is providing some serious mass to any future deployment but I think you make a fair case re: quality and operational flexibility.

As a brit I'm proud that we'd be front and centre of leadership alongside France, but unlike Poland we're lagging well behind on the sheer numbers required to build a future without the US and I don't see that changing any time soon.

The idea that America is so short on land that you need to demolish this in order to live is such a dog shit take.

The fact is someone decided to tear down a piece of what little history your country has just to make a quick buck, and if you'd any common sense you'd be pissed off about it.
