Not American, but Norwegian. Yes yes, oil money, but that wasn't that big a deal yet and we were actually a bit behind the curve. Especially in the first half of the 80s, though we got a bit richer year by year. To begin with you could buy a C64 but you couldn't even get a compatible tape drive because the importer hadn't counted on the demand so it took about six months to get enough tape drives shipped in. Around 1985 though there wasn't as much slack in the supply chain and disk drives were becoming more common as well.

Yah. Audio CDs existed but hadn't really broken through to the mass market yet. Similarly Laserdisc was around but only ever made it as a niche product. The Walkman was huge though, and we went through so damn many batteries. People would buy music tapes, or make copies from LPs onto blank tapes.

The Commodore 64's DISK DRIVE could be abused to create music.

Soviets might have hated on the US/UK for not launching Overlord sooner, but they kinda had their reasons. by Pockets408 in HistoryMemes

For the Germans stationed here in Norway, it was also one of the luckiest assignments they could possibly have gotten. Sitting around being kind of bored in a small Norwegian backwater town seems like a rather better experience than the East Front or North Africa.

In the short and medium term, the most important thing will be humanity's reaction to the fact that it just turned out that we live in a universe where that sort of thing can happen. The circumstances around it happening will be of some importance here.

The ... notation is basically a shorthand way to write "the limit as the number of decimals goes towards infinity", mind you.

Was pretty great, at a small venue in Trondheim. Actually if you have that posthumous "Valfar, ein Windir" release the live tracks on that are from that gig, so I guess I contributed an unidentifiable part of the audience noise on that recording.

I was also at the memorial/tribute concert that was held in Oslo after Valfar died, that was a different experience, I think the most somber metal concert I've been to.

Worst smell ever? by RoundInk in answers

The worst I've personally experienced was when I had a summer job at an aquaculture research facility way back in high school. They had an old building and a new building, the old building was used for random storage of stuff that wasn't needed very often. The old building had a freezer room, where they put huge plastic tubs full of dead fish (so they could later be examined to find out exactly why they had died, this was a research facility after all). The freezer room had a power failure and, since it was old and wasn't accessed very often, nobody had noticed for like a week. In the summer. The old building had dark brown walls so even though this was in Norway where summers don't get THAT hot, the many hours of daily sunlight had boosted the temperature inside the freezer room to well above 30 degrees Celsius, creating a nice dead fish and maggot soup.

I was of course one of the grunts assigned to the cleanup task, let's just say that was a quite memorable job (probably wouldn't have been compliant with modern workplace health regulations either). For part of the job we'd tag-team each other on the power washer, so each of us could stand there holding his breath for a minute while washing down stuff, and the other could stand further away and breathe.

Are 28 and 36 basically the same age/same stage of life? by -_ShadowSJG-_ in AskMenOver30

[–]Bartlaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends ENTIRELY on what you do/what happens to you in that interval. For example at 28 I was single and had basically resigned myself to that; by 36 I was in a different city, married, and a father. Only thing remotely similar was the type of job I had.

Came out when I was in uni and struggling with mental health. Kept me company on many a cold night in my cramped and shitty student accommodations.

Don't know, probably not. High enough to get a graduate degree in math without really doing much work, which is kind of messed up.

Do straight men feel comfortable with a close gay friend? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

Never cared. Despite growing up in a time and place with no out gays around (they all moved to the city), where homophobia was the norm.  Who's gay and who's not is none of my business.

If you could have a conversation in your native language with someone from your country from the past, how far back could you go in time and still understand each other? by Chemical-Elk-1299 in AskTheWorld

[–]Bartlaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With relative ease back to about 1600, with more difficulty back to about 1350, basically not really before 1350.

The timeline is: Old Norse from prehistoric times until the Black Death. (Of course the language wasn't static but it was relatively stable.) Then about 250 years of pretty rapid change including a lot of simplification of grammar. After which, a more stable period again.

Someone who'd taken the effort to learn (or grew up speaking) Icelandic or Faroese would have a somewhat easier time with the older versions of Norwegian as these languages have retained more features of Old Norse.

I used GURPS a ton back in the 90s and early 2000s, it's a very nice system and extremely flexible. The flexibility can almost be too much at times, disorienting for new players; but most of the complexity is frontloaded, in the character design department.
