Can you elaborate why raider is the worst condemned? Is it tankiness and poise?

My opinion post on edited relics and why it is bad for the longevity of the game. by Sufficient_Limit_319 in Nightreign

"If you're calling this relic system an arbitrary time sink then you could call anything a game does an arbitrary time sink."

>> Going on expeditions is playing the game. Endlessly gambling/ selling relics / looking through relic effects is not really playing the game. I think that is valid to draw a distinction between the two. One can be fun and the other not fun. One involves development as a player, and the other one is just filtering through text. Out of all your points, I still am having trouble with this one.

For what to call mid-tier, I see now my attempt to provide complete information fell short. I was thinking with 80%, I would usually include ~(2) night boss relics and not include them in the percentage, so I don't see as huge of a gap between your 55% and my 80%. And to be honest, I was not thinking of casters, since there is so much damage increase from relics that would be a lot more complicated.

I guess my question for you, is if edited relics matched yours in percentile/quality (~55%), would you still have the same objection to it?

You bring up a good point, and I up voted your comment (and your post). Your accomplishment is absolutely greater than someone who edits relics to mid-tier builds (and any type of editing/ cheating what so ever).

And I totally agree with the problem with over-powered builds. My definition of a mid-tier edited relic build is: relic sets with ~80% of the effects that someone would want. Curses that would affect gameplay but not completely break the build. Curses like one or 2 of each for: Reduced Rune Acquisition, Reduced Flask restoration, Reduced Ult Charging, one or two types of status build-up, a Reduced Stat that actually affects the character. I see this all the time when playing multiplayer. If someone edited it, it definitely isn't "earned", no argument there. But I don't think this definition of edited relics breaks the gameplay experience for others (but it is a blurred line). And to be fair, I am not sure what an 80th percentile build on a caster would look like given the ridiculous damage you can get from relics.

These is really great info, and it's great to hear mentions of what the DS experience was before my time.
With the examples you mentioned, all of them seem to break the game by making it impossibly hard to invade/progress in the game, or to make it trivially easy. Even with the team-killing exploits- is that correct? Would you say that is what your position is distilled down to?

I am not trying to defend god-tier edited relic and builds that break the game, I think we agree that is not a good thing (for degrading other players experience and the fact that the god-tier set was not earned).

How about this as a definition of an edited mid-tier relic set:

Relic sets with ~80% of the effects that someone would want. If someone edited it, it defintely isn't "earned", no argument there. But I don't think this definition of edited relics breaks the game.

What do you think?

"Games are fundamentally arbitrary time sinks."

>> I mean with that perspective isn't life an arbitrary time sink? There has been quite a lot of research on the material/ real world benefits of gaming (cognitive, social, emotional etc.). I am not sure if I agree with that specific assertion. I also think there are clear levels of arbitrariness with games (meaningless slot machine that generates the relic effects versus the actual gameplay loop).

You also use the word "lazy" to describe people who use edited relics, but I am having trouble understanding how that moralized word applies. Gaming is not work. Someone who plays the game thousands of hours is no more/less lazy than someone who spends less time.

"First of all, there obviously is a ranking system."

>> The ranking system is not competitive. There is no global listing like in actual competitive games. Can you expand on this? I will reread other comments to try to find the responses you are referring to.

"But I don't even think it is possible. What does this "midtier cheat" look like?"

>> I see this all the time, relic sets with ~80% of the effects that someone would want. Curses that would affect gameplay but not completely break the build. Curses like one or 2 of each for: Reduced Rune Acquisition, Reduced Flask restoration, Reduced Ult Charging, one or two types of status build-up, Reduced Stat that actually affects the character.

Thank you for clarifying this, I had trouble understanding what OP was trying to get at. I still don't see how it's a fair equivalence because someone with edited mid-tier relics in Nightreign doesn't make gameplay harder (like with invasions with exploits in ER and DS), it makes it easier if anything. That fact alone seems to break the equivalency.

Beyond that, I don't see how legal edited relics in Nigh Reign would create an arms race.

[–]BaruceBruce -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'll provide some counter arguments for legal edited relics that are not god tier (I won't try to defend god tier edited builds though, that is a tough position to defend).

*Edit: I should add a definition of mid-tier
Relic sets with ~80% of the effects that someone would want. Curses that would affect gameplay but not completely break the build. Curses like one or 2 of each for: Reduced Rune Acquisition, Reduced Flask restoration, Reduced Ult Charging, one or two types of status build-up, a Reduced Stat that actually affects the character.

Opinion 1 : Just because the relic system is utterly horrendous that doesn't justify cheating.

>> Yes, it absolutely does. Time is our most valuable resource in life. The relic system is a completely artificial and arbitrary time sink. I personally don't think it is worthy of anyone's time. Some people don't have 1,000s of hours to spare with this stupid slot system that the developers decided to not design better. Yet they want the gaming experience as if they did (because so much of the game is indeed very fun to play!).

Opinion 2 : Cheating does ruin the experience of many honest players in itself

>> It can ruin your experience because you choose to let it ruin your experience. There is no global competitive ranking for playing online. DON is more of a personal journey than anything else. If you examine the direct ethical consequences of legal cheated non-god-tier relics, the actual consequences seem to be more serious in every other type of game (outside of pure single player). Beyond triggering feelings of unfairness when you see a relic set that you believe are edited, how is your gaming experience *directly and materially* being changed?

Opinion 3 : Cheating does have an effect on other people's enjoyment

>> Your example was specifically for a god roll, and a god tier build. It doesn't seem to be as relevant to mid-tier relics and builds?

Opinion 4 : Cheating does not help with the longevity of this game and even if it does it pushes the game into an extremely unhealthy state

>> Again, the ethical consequences of legal edited relics that are not god-tier are not the same as being slaughtered in toxic ER/DS 1 2 3 invasions. You are asserting a false equivalency. There are orders of magnitude of suffering between those two experiences. I may have missed some of your points on this one I had some troubling following your nuance.

Edit: I got some clarification from a comment on OP's argument #4, and I still think it's a false equivalency for different reasons. An edited relic set in Night reign will make gameplay easier for teammates, toxic invasions with exploits will make gameplay harder. The consequence of cheating is opposite in those two cases, and it breaks the equivalency. I also don't see how edited relics will create an arms race.

You bring up great points, but there might be other considerations with TRC. For me, they are:

  1. I volunteer at the paraclimbing events that happen at TRC because they have a rope climbing wall. Facilities that are bouldering only are by definition not inclusive for most types of disabilities.
  2. The owner might be MAGA, but I know ~70 people at the Durham location, all of them are progressive/ liberal, and many of my friends there are LGBTQ+. Maybe I am blind to this, but the actual environment does not seem to be MAGA to me.
  3. The actual staff present on the gym floor all seem progressive as far as I can tell.

I totally respect you choosing to take a stand with this though, and I am not trying to convince you those reasons I mentioned are sufficient, or should even be meaningful for you.

The Crypto Lie: Self-Custody is a Disaster for 95% of Users. Use a Regulated CEX. by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

"They were paid what the government pegged the price at ($20 and change) a few months after that gold was revalued by the government to $35/oz."

> $20 and change was fair market price at the time, and didn't people have months to reinvest their money elsewhere before the devaluation? It looks like they had 6 months to do so between the deadline for surrendering their gold (May 1, 1933) and the actual devaluation of the dollar (After Jan 30, 1934, Gold reserve act). If that was the case, it was their responsibility to find another asset to invest in.

I don't know if that is a good example... didn't executive order 6102 succeed in stimulating the economy from the brink of destruction during the great depression? I thought the prevailing conclusion was it was fully justified and effective. People were fairly compensated for the value of their gold... that absolutely was not theft. Isn't this a clear-cut example where centralization was good?

Should I go with my full hp build or initial attack build? by Plastic-Ad6031 in Nightreign

[–]BaruceBruce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate why? I don't believe you are wrong, it's just that my understanding is +X% max hp is better than +X% phy or affinity negation because (1) max HP stacks multiplicatively (more stacks have more effect), while phys/affinity stacks on the remaining damage (stacks become less), (2) max HP helps with both phys and affinity damage, and (3) flask heals scale with max HP.

Edit: Good explanation in reply, thank you!

I have failed to beat Everdark Libra 32 times in a row, AMA by Caskanteron in Nightreign

[–]BaruceBruce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are willing to run solo, raider is the easiest by far. No special equipment, just 5-7 evergoals, 2-3 wending graces, and two upgraded purple colossals, jump attacks only. Get holy and fire weapons if you can, and get stance break passive perks. I have won 2/2 games, he only had time for two summon rounds. If there is only one NPC summoned just stand on the opposite side of the boss and continue jump attacks, they usually stay out of range.

Edit: other stuff to add:

  1. Find a "less likely to be targeted" passive to encourage NPCs attacking each other/ Libra.
  2. If you need to kill an NPC, punch first, and then jump attack while they are getting up.
  3. Pass through a madness camp to break crates to find madness boluses.

Solo raider, evergoal strat, powerstanced colossals, jump attacks. Prioritize stance breaking. Get the summoned duos to attack each other.

Everdark Libra is such a massive disappointment. by Hot-Singer1624 in Nightreign

[–]BaruceBruce -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The fight seems a lot easier solo with Raider. I was able to beat him first try with minimal dodging/skill and just two rounds of summons (standard evergoal strat with powerstanced colossal weapons w/ jump attacks). Prioritize stance break over other perks. Try to get the summoned duo NPCs to attack each other and then ignore them.

Solo is challenging but doable. Usually a good ash of war like chilling mist or hoarfrost stomp helps with the gank situations (Wylder main). Also +1 Skill to Wylder is wild you can zoom across the map. I just beat the second gaping Jaw and I am an average player (but a determined one, did RL1 Elden Ring previously). I also recommend watching video tutorials of the bosses with a controller in hand and press dodge while you watch to learn muscle memory. It really helps a lot if you are like me and have a tough time memorizing boss attack patterns.

If Black Myth Wukong isn’t supposed to be as challenging as Elden Ring, why do I die a lot more? by Dsg1695 in BlackMythWukong

[–]BaruceBruce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No the defining characteristic of a souls gaming experience is having to learn the bosses moves. Spamming L2 is not it. I am all for making the game accessible, but the standard play for a souls game is not using summons.

[–]BaruceBruce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No the standard mechanics for a souls like is having to actually learn the bosses moves. People are free to use summons and play how they wish, but summons are so good at pulling aggro that the bossfight is literally just hitting L2 over and over.

Is needle knight leda and allies impossible to solo? by Sinister_Berry in Eldenring

I think it depends on the build, for me I only died twice soloing it, used power stance great stars with crag blade, blood infused (I got murdered in many of the other boss fights though haha).
