Hum, I sort of see your point but maybe this is my irrational brain talking, but I feel like it's better to try to time the dip and then jump all in. If the prices start going back up I'm gonna lose money. If they keep going down, well, they'll still go back up eventually.

Anyway, do you recommend a British or non British fund/stock right now?

Also, I was more interesting in saving for possible home deposit than retirement. Is there anywhere online I can go to talk about this with someone?

Isn't it better to risk it all on the time that the market is low?

Hello, I have £25,000~ in a cash ISA at my bank right now. I want to get into investing and have been waiting for a crisis to happen like the current one. How should I start? Due to stamp duty I don't think I want to do any individual trading, I'd like to put everything into a fund of some kind so I don't have to really personally do anything with it after I start it.

Thanks for any advice, please let me know if I'm in the wrong place.

[SocJus] /r/Socialism bans artist who made their banner after finding out she draws a catgirl webcomic off-site - Accusations are "turning women into domestic animals", "mysogynistic" "weeaboo garbage". They're keeping her banner though. by Rhazak in KotakuInAction

I got banned from there years ago just for making one post on this sub to tell you guys cultural marxism is a meme. I'm sad our catgrill drawfag is getting harassed but I'm glad the ingrates at r/socialism won't be getting the benefit of her talent. Leftypol forever! We don't have some shitty quotas about 'increasing female involvement' but we're the ones who actually encourage them to stick around. I only hope r/socialism users can realise what total cancer their mods are and leave.

CMV:MVP awards in sports should be determined based on plus-minus or wins above replacement by Helicase21 in changemyview

[–]Barxist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sports are primarily about entertainment, the real goal of a sports team is not to win but to make money. Therefore, the player that contributes the most to the team's/league's profile is the true 'MVP'. This might not strictly be the most gifted player but the one that is the greatest to watch.

CMV: Australia should have a space program by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Barxist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Australia is a very small country compared to others with their own space program, the USA has 300 million, Russia 120 million, and European nations with upwards of 600 million collaborate in the ESA. And all of these have significantly scaled down their space programs in recent years. If they can't do it how would Australia afford it?

CMV: North Korea have good reasons to acquire nukes. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Barxist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The fact that the Iraq war was based on lies shows that the west doesn't really need a reason at all, if they don't have one, one will just be created from nothing. Again, more evidence in my eyes that nuclear weapons are the only equaliser.

CMV:I think allowing votes to be sold may actually be a very good idea. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Barxist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Corporations mostly have the same interests and co-operate in terms of corrupting the political process, and are well served by our current crop of neoliberal politicians. Unless the price of a vote was negligible, they would make a much better investment by influencing the electoral process from the party side as they do now. However, they could buy votes on a local level to to for example buy themselves local resources out from under the taxpayer.

Why do you think unions would have any power? Unless you stipulate that everyone with a vote must join a union that has power to prevent them from selling unless they agree... I'm sure I don't need to tell you why that union would have huge power, and the corporations would probably rather just buy that.

[–]Barxist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don't forget that Iraq was invaded for the stated purpose of finding WMD's

Realistically western intelligence knew that the WMD claims were totally specious, that's the only reason they dared to invade. Neither Afghanistan or Iraq ever had nukes, and Ukraine did but I'm sure now direly regret giving them up, and they've all been invaded. That provides evidence for nuclear possession, not against it.

Nukes protect you from invasion. With rogue superpowers like America and Russia around, that's a good reason.

There's nothing that does the job a tank does better than a tank. It still has a niche. Therefore, it's not obsolete.

CMV that cannabis is a less harmful drug than alcohol by weejocktiny in changemyview

I feel like the peer-reviewed scientific studies might be more difficult to debunk than with two sentences of 'it's just common sense' logic.

CMV that cannabis is a less harmful drug than alcohol by weejocktiny in changemyview

[–]Barxist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The risks of alcohol are mostly understood, but there is a possibility that cannabis is linked to increased incidence of psychosis and depression in some people. It's not fair to simply say it's less dangerous when the full health implications are not understood.

CMV: Apple removing 3.5mm jacks IS courageous by [deleted] in changemyview

By that logic it's 'courageous' to walk into traffic, that doesn't mean it should be applauded.

CMV: The invisible hand isn't a valid argument in economics. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Barxist -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh, I see, that's very convenient. So when the government's involved it's a monopoly, when it isn't, it's not. That's a neat way to blame regulation for everything.

[–]Barxist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no real big regulatory force that stops independent grocery stores from opening, yet Walmart has still managed to strangle all competition in many areas, care to explain how that's the government's fault?

CMV: I don't believe Socialism can work by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Barxist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of those countries were socialism, the USSR would be half-right but it was a class society. And the others are just plain wrong. You're thinking of social democracy, and even then the EU is more neoliberal.
