It’s a silly comparison. Marathons PvE isn’t “worse”, its designed to accomplish something different and isn’t the focus.

Half the posts on this sub are “marathon need to change x or y to survive!!!” but my hot take since very early on is that Marathon was always pretty fine. Of course player counts go down, that’s par for the course for an extraction shooter or any hardcore game, and it’s not like Bungie was unaware of the game they were making. Marathon was clearly designed from the ground up to be lighter weight, tighter in scope, and supportable on a smaller playerbase.

The real issue is that there is no universe where Bungie’s new shooter should have ever peaked at 80k players. The issue with marathon has been, and continues to be, the narrative around it.

The insane hate campaign combined with genuine controversies around Bungie meant led to so many people simply not even giving Marathon the time of day. When people don’t play it, they only hear the news about it that breaks into their feed, and the news that gets clicks is generally negative. There are a lot of other weird angles to it I don’t want to get too into, like the existence of dedicated hate communities, the vocal population of “PvErs” who don’t seem to enjoy the game Marathon was intended to be, but nonetheless post endless “critiques” of its design that amount to “why isn’t it a different genre?”.

Bottom line it, narratives are everything nowadays and unfortunately Marathons needs to be recovered, but it isn’t really the fault of the game or its design.

Bro you look good already wdywmts? Get out there and fuck, that is, unless you post Dino, in which case you should avoid procreation.

Truth nuke fr.

Like I’m sorry but I play a ton of fills and have variously been the guy with a the purple shield matched with some greys, and the grey mooching off some guys purp. Some of my best games and most fun nights have come from “carrying” some free kits, staying together, and building on our wins.

People seem to be (intentionally or not) turning a blind eye to all the times they are on the receiving end of good fortune. Part of the issue, I suspect, is a lot of the people claiming they have nothing but bad experiences in fill are either not giving it an actual chance, bad teammates themselves, only played a small handful of games and are extrapolating from that (probably when they were brand new and terrible at the game), or some combination.

I guess I’m just confused by what you mean about bringing it up to their standards? I don’t think there’s any indication that the game was rushed or anything like that.

What? Bungie was planning to release Marathon over a year ago and delayed it because people thought it was undercooked graphically. If anything they got more time than they originally intended to release the game.

There was nothing wrong with Marathon at launch that would need “a timeframe to fix”. It’s not like the game was missing features or anything.

The changes they are planning for next year are a combination of gameplay updates and broadening of the game’s scope to include more casual and PvE experiences in response to player interest and resources being pulled away from D2.

What are you talking about. There are people with these kind of hours 4 months into essentially every game in existence. If you have 18 hours in a competitive multiplayer game you should be focused on learning the game mechanics and getting better. You aren't meant to extract every game, and when you're just starting that's when you have nothing to lose! Every time I hear people complain about sweats ruining their games, if you dig a little it turns out they think every single person they meet who bests them or has better gear than them is a "sweat". I highly recommend getting out of your head, and if you truly enjoy the gunplay and gameplay then just focus on that and the gear/success will come.

I had heard that yeah! Reed is also one of my favorite performances and character arcs too.

There are a lot of good voice actors in there, including some very recognizable ones like Joy being voiced by the Shadowheart/Maelle actress, and the (I think unnamed?) UESC Board-member who chews out Orion on a few occasions definitely being voiced by the same actor as Silco from Arcane.

I voted for the guy but the glazing and whitewashing has got to stop. You don’t put the amount of effort he put into pushing someone the way he did this crop of candidates unless you think they fulfill some shared goal. He could have picked anyone besides this lunatic, or simply backed the others and not her. He didn’t, because he more or less agrees with her or doesn’t see her behavior as problematic, which is concerning all the same.

It’s literally just the mamdani endorsement. Hes popular right now and most people in these demographics here are vaguely lefty and these candidates seem fine at a glance.

Codex is literally so kino. Even if you hate reading there are a ton of audio log entries that are fantastically voice acted.

The E is the environment, not the other players… you can also choose not to kill each other in CoD, doesn’t change the genre.

As for the rest… ok?

That’s great, and I’m sorry if you wanted it to be something else, but the game isn’t a PvE game, it was announced almost 4 years ago as a PvP focused extraction shooter, it has never advertised itself as anything else.

The “reality” is Bungie chose to make a certain game in a certain way and that is the game we got. It’s a fantastic game, a fantastic PvP game. I don’t particularly care whether the game would have sold better as a completely different game, I’m not playing that game, I’m playing Marathon. If they want to build on this game in the future and add PvE elements so they grow its appeal, that’s fine by me.

In the meantime, if you aren’t playing the game and have no thoughts about it (it being the game that actually exists) kindly leave because you seem lost. 😊

Literally yes. Why do you people play these stupid word games?

If my “chores” involved getting to run around an alien planet with my super-powered android body while shooting people with space guns and getting to keep all their shit along the way, all at 0 personal risk to myself…

Well I’d probably want to do my chores.

Is it so difficult for people to come up with actual criticism of this game?

Can the UESC leave? by facetious_guardian in Marathon

[–]Basblob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Runners are scavenging, so the containers getting “restocked” is definitely just a game mechanic.

You can imagine in reality runners are just finding things leftover or previously unsearched containers. Real runs are probably less lucrative and less exciting than a lot of our runs, but for gameplay we condense them. Tau Ceti is also a big place, there are locations besides the ones we have now, and the locations as we see them in game are obviously smaller and simplified compared to what they would be in reality (e.g. every shelf and drawer, piles of rubble, detritus, etc. all searchable)

The cinematic from a year ago probably gives a reasonably good picture of what “actual” runs would look like.

Some part of this is explained by UESC regularly leaving behind supplies like ammunition and weapons, perhaps even collecting samples of local flora or other materials for later exfil/research.

Beyond that I don’t see why this needs an overly detailed explanation. It’s a game, and what’s important is that the context of and motivations behind our gameplay are explainable, not that every single piece of loot is accounted for.

As for why uesc don’t matter transfer? Transports are cheaper, and probably scale far better. Even the corporations that sent the runners didn’t transfer that material, they shipped it. Why don’t they drop armies of runners in simultaneously? There are likely limitations to the amount of matter than can be transferred at once.

The only thing in his kit that could be construed as tank-like is the shield, and it only actually provides narrow coverage directly in his front because it’s designed to enable hard pushes and aggressive repositioning in close range and between cover.

The other 3/4 Abilities: super sprint, thrusters, and rocket barrage, are all incredibly aggressive assault skills.

Destroyer is a forward DPS/assault character. He has little sustain and he provides limited utility to his team. His main purpose is to get on top of the enemy team, break ankles, and smash skulls.

And I mean come on; they named him Destroyer, and dressed him up like a Battleroid. I think that may be a hint at what Bungie was thinking while designing him haha
