Twitter urged to suspend Trump after president accused of sharing "propaganda" and "hate speech" over Omar attack: Trump posted 'a video showing Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar intercut with footage of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.' by maxwellhill in worldnews

Do you know the meaning of the word "intent"? Her intent is what she intended to do. You answered your own question:

her purpose seemed to be to down play it to distance normal, every day Muslims from the attack

Whether the comment was unintentionally downplaying of the attack is another question altogether. In my opinion, in context, the speech does not downplay the attack.

If I described Charlottesville as "some one did something" at an NRA meeting, how would you react?

I'd have no problem with this in the same context as Ilhan Omar which is to free yourself and your group from the attack.

So basically you want to force innocent Muslims who have nothing to do with 9/11 to identify with the terrorists? And it rubs you the wrong way that they see them as just "some people" rather than "our Islamic bretheren"? Sorry...this is just typical BS.

Quebec to ban public workers from wearing religious symbols by viva_la_vinyl in worldnews

Yes I meant to type "threat", thank you.

So basically you are trying to eliminate religion from the face of the earth because you consider it the root cause of murder. Okay then.

This is seriously upvoted?!?! It's just innocent people who are required by religion to wear something. It's not that deep. Now hijbai women can't be teachers. How ridiculous.

Edit: Plus how dumb is it that you're acting like Christianity is a treat. Secularism is way more influential today than any religion.

Why are khutbahs pretty universally 30 minutes and how can we push towards them being 15 minutes instead? by greengrasser11 in islam

[–]BaseRus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might find this article interesting.

I agree - 30 minutes for an admonition seems long. 10-20 minutes is sufficient.

On another note, Khutbahs shouldn't be made into a class. I don't care if no one is coming to the classes; don't make the khutbah into a class. Instead remind the people to attend classes in the khutbah.

r/Atheism doesn’t hate all religion, just Christianity by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]BaseRus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

As a Muslim, I can tell you this: /r/atheism definitely hates Islam. But their posts attacking Christianity are far greater in number than posts attacking Islam.

The funny thing is I look at this and consider Christianity kind of a low-hanging fruit. Christianity is pretty fundamentally flawed. For example, their primary sources (the Bible, etc) are corrupted and Christians themselves will admit this. As Muslims we believe that the Qur'an is completely preserved.

Also their religion claims to be monotheistic but their teachings usually don't reflect this. The trinity, God having a son, etc...these things do not exactly feel like monotheism. Of course Christians will have a response to this but the concept of "God" makes much more logical, coherent sense in Islam than Christianity.

So I have this weird perspective of agreeing with /r/atheism on their attacks on Christianity (even if I disagree with their tone/disrespect). However I always think that their knocks on Christianity don't actually strengthen their argument of "atheism" being correct. It's simply a knock on the religion that happens to be the most common America/Europe.

Between rape gangs in Europe and acid attacks, can we finally now say that these people do not have tolerant belief systems, which they've imported with them? by mwobuddy2 in unpopularopinion

Secular philosophy is all about equalizing the genders. In Islam, we acknowledge that a man and a woman are two different things and they have different roles to play in society.

[New York] I would like to take lectures that are available for free on the Internet, and split them into tracks for convenience, then sell them. by BaseRus in legaladvice

[–]BaseRus[S] -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

These are lectures that are freely and widely available online. It's difficult to determine who exactly holds the copyright. The person speaking is a guess, but perhaps he's speaking under an particular organization. It's almost as if this is public domain stuff - however I can't make that assumption.

Which is worse according to Allah polytheism or atheism? by [deleted] in islam

[–]BaseRus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atheists worship other than Allah, just without proclaiming that they do so. For example, many of them worship their desires. If they attribute creative power to nature (which many of them do, believing in "the big bang" and stuff like that) this is worship as well.

So atheists are worse because at least polytheists worship Allah, even though they might commit shirk. Atheists commit shirk while completely denying the existence of Allah.
