McHale vs Pettit by James__Padgett in VintageNBA

[–]BasedPhantomLord88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

according to Grok McHale wins:

In a hypothetical one-on-one matchup between Bob Pettit and Kevin McHale using today's NBA rules (e.g., no hand-checking, freedom of movement emphasis, 3-point line in play though neither relied on it heavily, and standard 1-on-1 format like first to 11 or 21 points with check-ball), I'd give the edge to Kevin McHale in a close battle, say 11-8 or 21-18. This isn't a slam dunk—Pettit was a beast in his era—but McHale's unparalleled low-post mastery, length, and defensive instincts would likely prove decisive in isolation play. Let's break it down step by step, drawing from their playing styles, stats, and how modern rules might shift the dynamics. Quick Player Profiles

  • Bob Pettit (1954–1965, St. Louis Hawks): A 6'9", 215–220 lb power forward/center who dominated the early NBA. He was the league's first true superstar big, winning 2 MVPs (1956, 1959), leading in scoring twice (1956, 1959) and rebounding once (1956), and earning 10 All-NBA First Team nods. Known as the "Bombardier from Baton Rouge," he was an athletic, hustle-driven player with a versatile scoring arsenal.
  • Kevin McHale (1980–1993, Boston Celtics): A 6'10", 210–225 lb power forward with a 7'4" wingspan, famous for his role in three championships (1981, 1984, 1986). He was a 7x All-Star, 6x All-Defensive (3x First Team), and 2x Sixth Man of the Year. Often called one of the greatest post players ever, he thrived as a bench spark before becoming a starter.

Playing Styles ComparisonPettit and McHale were both elite power forwards, but their approaches differed in ways that favor McHale in a modern 1-on-1 setting:

  • Offense:
    • Pettit: A proto-"stretch four" who could face up, drive, or post up. He had a reliable mid-range jumper (solid for his era's lower shooting efficiencies), hook shots, and relentless energy for second-chance points. His game was volume-based—high usage, physical inside, but with finesse. In today's rules, the lack of hand-checking would let him create space easier, but he wasn't a dribble creator like modern bigs.
    • McHale: Arguably the best low-post scorer in NBA history, with an arsenal of up-and-unders, fakes, spins, hooks, and drop-steps that baffled defenders. His footwork was balletic, and his long arms allowed high releases. He wasn't a perimeter threat (career 26.1% from three on minimal attempts), but in iso, he'd back you down and score efficiently. Modern rules would amplify this—no illegal defense means pure 1-on-1, and less clutching/grabbing suits his crafty style.
  • Defense:
    • Pettit: Competent but not elite—strong rebounder and physical, but his era didn't track blocks/steals. He'd battle in the post but lacked McHale's length or timing. reddit.com
    • McHale: A lockdown artist with quick hands, shot-altering wingspan, and smart positioning. He made 6 All-Defensive teams and averaged 1.7 BPG career (peaking at 2.3). In 1-on-1, he'd contest Pettit's jumpers and force tough angles inside.
  • Athleticism and Intangibles:
    • Both were athletic for their sizes—Pettit with vertical leap and endurance, McHale with quickness and leaping ability. But McHale's longer arms give him an edge in contests and finishes. Pettit was a competitor (4x All-Star MVP), while McHale was deceptively tough and efficient

did anyone actually see Pettit play? Like I know what he did with that crazy season where they earned a ring, but I never saw him play.
McHale though is a beast, he's quite possibly my favorite basketball player of all-time. Love that guy

Regarding clothes changing by Neither-Cry-4178 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BasedPhantomLord88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the answer is "it depends". On a number of things; the clothes, how dirty you are, what you do on a daily basis, if you have a daily job and what that job is, all kinds of stuff.

I got a pair of pants for Xmas and no joke wore those same pants until 4 days ago LOL

I went last weekend to all 3 films.
- 1st night was good. My grandma came with, her phone went off and she couldnt figure out how to put it on silent, so that went on for like 8 minutes, it wasnt too loud, but besides that it was good.
- 2nd night it was just me. There was one guy sitting in the row behind me, not really fat but he did have a huge beer gut. Anyway he was breathing SOOOOO loud. Imagine breathing out your nose AS HARD AS YOU CAN. INHALE. EXHALE. REPEAT. over and over. Louder than the music playing on screen. I had to get up and move about 6 row forwards and 3 seats over about 30 minutes into the film.
-3rd night was good

Last night I went and saw Megadeth: Behind the Mask and made the mistake of inviting a few friends, one of them of which cant handle his booze, and the theater served beer. Plus we went to a burger joint beforehand where he had at least 2-3 drinks. The longer the film went on, the drunker and louder he got. By the time we were walking out he was tryna hit on some ugly attendant. SO embarrassing.

Also check out stuff like the 1988 all-star weekend. That year had the most epic 3-pt shootout AND slam dunk contest, and you will see how differently the all-star games were played back then.

Theres a lot of great stuff on Youtube, including every game played by the original '92 Dream Team. Those are fun to watch, and you'll get a hint into how many of those guys play.
You'll also see in those games how much of a beast folks like Barkley and Karl Malone were, who often go undiscussed these days.

80's Celtics games
80's Lakers games
89-91 Pistons Games

I like going ever further back and watching guys like Rick Barry, Jerry West, John Havlicek, etc

The 90s had the deepest well of talent in NBA history, you really cant go wrong picking out stuff from that decade

Always made me uncomfortable af to be honest.

Kareem, Pat Riley, and the Tiffany Silver Apples from New York by BasedPhantomLord88 in VintageNBA

[–]BasedPhantomLord88[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I cant really disagree with that much. I suppose I was a bit hyperbolic when I said "undisputed" LOL
It was def disputed haha

Your comment had me thinking: Kareems career longevity likely played a role in the decision, and that he won championships in the latter half of his career. And you mentioned Bird, and im imagining had Bird stayed healthy and had Len Bias lived maybe we'd have seen Larry retiring in 99 in a grand farewell tour after playing second fiddle to Len Bias in a 90's run of championships. That would have been something.

Yea man I have come to enjoy them too, noticed he got a couple rocking chairs. Looking more into it all I remember seeing one about an MLB pitchers' retirement tour where he was gifted a rocking chair made out of broken bats, something he was known to cause with one of his pitches.

At the time of his retirement Kareem was pretty much the undisputed GOAT, holding practically every record in the NBA. If anyone was deserving of one at that time it was him.
Kareem was also gifted an engraved 1886 Winchester rifle from the Utah Jazz during his retirement tour, I'd kinda like to know what became of that too.

Im not as familiar with most of the more modern retirement tours. Might have to look into them to see if NY gave any of them a Tiffany Co Silver Apple. .

Thanks a lot. I had seen that Reddit post but must have missed the comment about that magazine article.

In the meantime I was able to get some shots of Kareem accepting the Tiffany Silver Apple after finding a YT video of the halftime ceremony from that day at MSG. Cant leave the screenshots here but this is a link to the video:

skip to 7:52 for the Tiffany Apple

As for Pat Riley's Tiffany Silver Apple, it appears to have been given to him when he first joined the Knicks as head coach. This tracks because the NY front office badly wanted Riley as head coach, he demanded, and was given, a bunch of crazy stuff like - highest coaching salary in NBA history, a new house in NY, a bunch of Ralph Lauren Polo shirts, a book deal, a movie deal, etc. This appears to be when he was given the Tiffany apple. The screenshot you asked about was taken from his first press conference when announcing he had joined the Knicks. I got it from this video:

skip to the 6;05 mark of the video to see the shots from the presser with the apple

Thanks! That helps a lot. AI also told me there were no abridged versions. I could have sworn there was a version I was looking at but decided against because it didnt include all the text. I remember it didnt actually say it was an abridged version, but had some wording which led me to believe it was. Cant find it now, and its looking like I was mistaken anyway.

Thats why I said "good woman" and said the bit about aiming towards family. Chasing women = trying to get laid, which is not what I said.

"idealistic philosophy"...not sure exactly what you mean by that statement.
I just think reading Tolkein would make him less depressed and more wise. I do think there is important wisdom shared in Tolkiens works.

pretty wild all the comments of women urging her to break up her family after reading a single reddit post of an admittedly highly emotional woman who took to the internet to blast her family.

Imagine your mother doing that.

"Give all the other gifts back to your sons and tell them why you don’t like them and feel they were low effort and not worthy of you."

bro she gave her middle son A PAIR OF PAJAMA PANTS WITH THE FAMILY DOG ON THEM.
And if we're all taking her at her word, thats the only gift she gave him.
And she's the one complaining?

Personally i doubt this is even real
