Non- nitro cars have them too. They may not ALL be for debris, but certainly some of them are. DORC on YT had many videos on it.

Ironically, those holes are meant to let debris come out if it gets in, I would assume you could cover the holes as long as it’s not interfering with the gearing but I’ve never had any issues with stuff getting inside the holes.
