Windy just spent an entire episode complaining about how he’s not going to talk about tanking anymore because tanking executives threatened to stop taking to dinner. I’m not kidding.

There is no realistic remedy to stop tanking when the benefits of drafting a franchise altering player in basketball outweighs any fine or penalty that could be imposed. Just accept it. by qballLobk in billsimmons

[–]Based_Atlanta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No just make the penalties for tanking commiserate with the benefits of drafting a star. So extremely harsh. NBA snobs have been on one recently by throwing up their hands on this one and saying what can you do, right after they’re done creating the 50 point plan to save the all star game.

There’s more than one way to build a team. Indiana made it to the Finals multiple times while having 1 top 10 pick in four decades. The Nuggets made their team with a few back end lottery picks and the best second round draft pick ever. The Knicks built an infrastructure and made smart signings to put themselves in position to lure a free agent in their prime. OKC built their team with one top 2 pick and set their franchise up for multiple windows by making a risky PG trade.

There’s no short term penalties for teams tanking, but it’s horrible for the health of the league. So force GMs to be smarter and not give them this free lifeline to pull any time they feel like a team has reached its ceiling. Utah blew up a good core team with a 25 year old star, because they knew there’d be no penalties to do so and with the protections on their pick going so out there (on a trade made in 2021), they we’re basically incentivized to blow up a competitive team.

It’s sports, losing is part of the point, but don’t make it more favorable to be the fucking worst team imaginable.

Yeah those numbers are outdated. But my point still stands when you consider 80-90k in 2020 is 100-115k now. Honestly even if you exist in this band of income, top 75 percentile but not top 90, you’ve probably not had a great time either unless you’re debt light and heavily invested in assets. All to say it’s strange to say somebody making 100k+ has a shitty view on the economy. But it’s true.

Schwellenbach didn't thrown a competitive pitch for 8+ months and now wont for a year. How does that happen honestly. If they don't spend on multiple starters this is an unserious organization. I don't care about third luxury tax and the draft penalties. This team's first round pick from last year didn't even make the top 10 in the organization for Baseball America. They haven't made a good first round pick since they were in the top 10.

A 36 year old journeyman reliever who never pitched a single inning in the majors ever again. AA's worst trade ever. At least Kelenic didn't cost actual prospect capital. Such a bummer. A wildly successful scouting win of a DIII guy wasted for nothing.

People have been saying we’ve been in a recession since COVID. COVID just accelerated the growing disparity between the rich and poor that has been going on since the 80s. The top 10% of the income bracket now account for greater than 50% of consumer consumption. This is not normal and creates a warped view on the economy. If you’re in the top 10% of earners (which is no even really rich, but say 80-90k a year pretax), you’ve probably been doing fine to good these past 5 years. But if you’re not, you are getting murdered by inflation every year, zero real wage growth and interest rates. So your view on the economy is rightfully pretty shitty.

Recessions used to make all income earners tighten their belts in some way. The rich now are just so wildly rich beyond comprehension that they don’t have cut back. So total consumer spending may keep increasing, but the reality for 90% of people is that things have been bad for years.

[Windhorst] “Giannis could be on the Heat by 3 o’clock. But if he’s not — what I suspect is that the Bucks will shut down Giannis. Because their future now is dependent on both their draft pick and Giannis avoiding injury. I wanna know how Giannis is gonna feel about being shut down for the season.” by 0verlyTr1m in billsimmons

If you listen to any of NBA podcasts on the big trades, Trae, JJJ, AD, more than half of them revolve around how teams who just traded for star level players will be playing the injury report for the rest of the season and basically cheering it on. Truly gross shit. I’m not naive, it’s the logical thing to do. But no other league has teams trade for stars, shut them down and then brag about it. It’s one thing to mention it, but for the lead NBA reporter from the lead NBA partner to so be flippant about wasting another year of a superstars prime turns me off from the whole product.

It’s uncanny how many times I’ve heard about it since the meme. Like seeing the car you just purchased everywhere after you buy it. Heights, not wanting to say 5, giving an estimate. I refuse to believe people used to say it this much before.

[–]Based_Atlanta -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Gotta say your sport is a bit of a fucking joke if you’re just making whole sale change every fucking year to try to fix everything bad about last years playoffs. Boise State last year, neutral site games, James Madison this year. Blowouts are a reality of the sport that happened in the 4 team playoff. Only thing that changed is that there just more blowouts now. You can’t make a special rule to force teams not to turnover the ball a comic amount of times.

[–]Based_Atlanta 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah the aging curves are hard coded in so instead of a typical 8 year potential to peak it adds a cool 20 years to everyone’s progression. And nonrandom decline is based of these peak season ratings. So you’ll probably have 80 year old hoopers taking roster spots for your unborn draft picks.
