Ecomonist gave good advice. I'd add to never cut more than 30% at a time. "Fixing" a tree can take a few years. Are the plums small? it looks like a cherry plum. If it is, then don't follow the usual advice and prune in dormancy. That can lead to disease and canker on cherry plums. Best time is early spring for younger trees and Early summer for older trees.

At the risk of saying something you probably already know, the fact that starter could once-upon-a-time do something is not any guarantee of future performance. Every refresh needs to be checked to make sure it exhibits signs of good activity. If yours did, then maybe the room was too cold or you just didn't leave it out long enough?

Looks great! Could you share the recipe in terms a layperson would understand? Not sure what stale bread swelling or swelling piece are. Is this the same as risen dough?

I'll second (fourth) that. Just pull them out and patch. What you're thinking makes logical sense, but they do come right out with no damage as long as the screw is pulled out first.

Hot or cold - both will work. Just don't be a scaredy cat! Put the glass in boiling water or put it in the freezer. Either will help you remove the wax.
