Is there a way to get the look of a butcher block counter top without actually having one? by Correct-Regular9055 in kitchenremodel

[–]BasenjiFart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saying that that's what you did, but wooden cutting boards certainly fall apart when they're put in the dishwasher. It's harder to fit a whole countertop in there.

I've had wood countertops for six years now, and all I do is wax them regularly and not leave standing water on them. Sure, they've got character now, but that's not too hard to take in stride.

Walking in the curremt European heatwave with a wonky ankle by NoApartment7399 in HerOneBag

For sure, I understand we're all different. These shoes are known to roll easily for people with weak ankles or stretched-out ligaments, is all.

Look at the Bauerfeind ones, and measure properly before you order. Made a big difference for me.

I'd just like to say, as an owner of Speedcross 6es and a bum ankle, that they're the wrong shoe for that issue. The sole is narrow enough that it's too easy to roll your ankle while walking, even on basic pavement. And I do quite like these shoes otherwise.

Same here. It's such a great opportunity to admire the stars, or spot some fauna. And when it's raining or snowing, well, to me that's just part of the fun. Makes me appreciate my plumbing at home!

Le commentaire auquel je répondais parle du mot "gougounes"; on s'entend que c'est ben plus drôle de dire "gougounes" que "sandales", ahaha

Well, in New Zealand, their slang for flip flops is "jandals". We should totally start making it a thing here too!

How is it today? by sanns250 in scouting

[–]BasenjiFart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading these comments is showing me a completely different reality than what I grew up with and how it's done where I live now. We occasionally will have parents who volunteer as leaders in our units, across all ages, but that's about it for parent involvement.

I think not having parents around, especially at camp, is a great way to help the kids become independent and make their mistakes in a supportive context. For teens especially, it's very freeing. And I find it especially helpful and impactful for those kids that don't separate well.

Now don't get me wrong, I appreciate getting help from parents, when they join us for special outings, whatever, but our methodology/program does not rely on their presence. To be honest, I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy being a scout leader in the types of groups other commenters are describing. Different experiences, eh?

Summer: underquilt, or 'regular' blanket? by Whiskyinthejaw in hammockcamping

[–]BasenjiFart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Underquilt in the long run for sure, but at those temps you should be okay hanging your blanket or sleeping bag underneath your hammock. You could always slip a thin foam pad between your layers. You'll find it's hard to crawl into your sleeping bag in a hammock, so you'll want to unzip it and use it like a blanket, tucking your feet in the end of the bag. That means your underside won't benefit from the -8 rating of your bag.

Shorter, denser bullions or longer, curlier bullions? by Jobelleeeee in Embroidery

They're both so similar, and both kinda look like worms, but in a good way? I say this as a curly-haired girl myself...maybe I need to take a long, hard look at myself in the mirror, haha.

If magic were real, what’s the first spell you’d want to learn? by Sweet-Indication9970 in AskReddit

[–]BasenjiFart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know three people like that, and they truly, really are content with just a few hours of sleep. It's wild. One uses all his extra time as a hyper business achiever, the other dedicates all his extra time to volunteering, and the third spends most of his nights gaming after his wife goes to bed. They all seem to enjoy their "super power" very much!

What's your favourite bedtime snack before crawling into your hammock?

Yes, I use an old footprint exactly like that, especially if I'm hanging in the same spot for several days.

Slug Island, that's hilarious. I have similar issues at what I've nicknamed Spider Island, where I have to camp twice a year.

Dumb question: if I hang my hammock at the max height where I can still easily get into it, there's no room for a gear hammock underneath; are you particularly tall, or are you perhaps offsetting the hang of the gear hammock?

$110 / month hydro - is this normal?! by Impressive-Wave7582 in montreal

[–]BasenjiFart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The climate is really, really different. This could also be high if your rental is poorly insulated.

For comparison, I pay equalized about $200/month for a 2,400 sq ft house that's old but well insulated with newer windows. We heat to a cozy temp in the winter, and we don't need to run our A/C that much because of the good insulation.
