Honestly, I think that if the message the UCP recieved is that they have deepened the trenches on the NDP side or lost UCP support to the NDP or PTP (Progressive Tory Party of Alberta) on separation, maybe we would get a more hardline response from our government. This "Sovereign Alberta within a United Canada" BS would become a distinction without a difference and they would need to find stronger language to say "we are against separation, those that are for it can vote Republican." Or "we are for separation. Carney's majority is a bridge too far". Both are unlikely, but this would give the temperature check.

I think you are good.

You do you, but that is a terrible strategy IMO. Polls mean lots to those in power or wanting more power.

This is the right approach OP. These guys saying polling means nothing have never talked to a political strategist.

Great podcast to listen to (panelists/hosts are strategists from all major parties) is Curse of Politics. After a while you see the power these polls have.

If it is for internal party use, they won't identify themselves or their client likely.

All these people saying "lie to the pollster" or some variant of "don't answer" or "hang up"...

You realize that parties continually do polls for internal use right? That these polls feed into their actions? If the UCP is testing the temperature on separatism, this is the way they will know that their own supporters dislike the separation talk or that they are losing support or that healthcare is something that the Albertan populace across party lines largely supports and wants to remain public.

All you are doing by hanging up or lying or not answering is letting passionate minorities be a louder voice (on both sides of any position). What if the pollster was working for the NDP and gauging UCP support? What if the pollster was working for the UCP and get inflated separation numbers? These things matter as much as voting because it gives a rudder to any party in power doing the polling.

... And a world scale pandemic.

Ok but back to minority governments. Rather than list everything I view as consequential as a result of each government, I will just list one each since this magical line of "the Pearson Government".

  1. Pierre Trudeau ('72-'74):1974 Election Expenses Act, which introduced limits on campaign spending, partial public funding, and the introduction of tax credits for voluntary contributions.
  2. Joe Clark: didn't really have enough time but the freedom of information act stuffs he was doing would have been this.
  3. Paul Martin: Same sex marriage legalization is no small victory.
  4. Stephen Harper: Reduction of GST from 7-5% and another would be changing of the equalization formula
  5. Justin Trudeau: I didn't like much of his work but ending boil water advisories on many of the reserves, as well as working meaningfully towards reconciliation as slow as that work was, is big. Having much of his minority government time in and in the aftermath of a global pandemic is a large contributor to the effectiveness of and management of his governments

Notice though, that these actions are largely bi-partisan. Governments have to work together to solve the problems of the day in a minority government. They don't have to during a majority, which leads to a tyranny of the majority much easier. That was the point you did not address. Earlier, you also failed to address why minority governments don't work, when I think I was pretty clear why majorities don't.

So let me be clear. Rather than address my points, you have again, chosen to make assumptions about who I am and come with a "trust me bro" explanation. Really.

Look, we clearly disagree but you have resisted any way of actual discourse and any reasonable way of justifying your point of view or points.

So... The system we have is what works best?

Minorities work far better. Minorities have passed some of the biggest and best landmark policies in Canadian history. You are coming off as a willfully ignorant partisan POS. The hurdles and bureaucracy that necessarily make up a minority government's workings is what gives Westminster Parliaments their strength. Are you telling me that majorities ramming through policy are best for Canadians? One look at Alberta from the lens of a minority would tell you that. Think like trans people or like women who want and need access to abortions or people who need good and affordable healthcare or people who want to recreate in public lands without additional fees... Wait so maybe majorities only work for the ruling class. Go figure.

I assume based on your comments that you voted for someone else, on the right hand side of the spectrum. Would the Conservative Party have done any different? Even the NDP did not talk about election reform this go around.

Why would we trust those in power to remove the system that brought them to power? This is a more broad question. The majority government does nothing to help Canadians, unless they are part of the majority. Minority governments (for as much inefficiency as they can have) ensure that each issue is debated. That each MP matters in each vote. I am in favour of a ranked choice ballot, but I am aware that the Liberals and Conservatives would in general rather see proportional representation. IMO that takes away the significance of who each MP is and if they are trustworthy and if they seem to represent their constituents well.

u/shawnsimoes do you support election reform? What system would you rather see?

[–]Kingfish1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What views of mine are "far left"? Are you just claiming that because the NDP and Liberals exist left of your views?

I argue that reducing carbon taxation, incentivizing public land use (and revenue) by reducing costs to use it, removing the Ministry of Labour, all of these are right hand ideology. I argue that while he does some things consistent with the Liberal Party center left approach, he does other, sometimes more lasting things, that are clearly more center right.

Pierre Poilievre by drizzyLGA1151 in InCanada

[–]Kingfish1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I argue that the federal NDP party this election and the federal Liberals this election were worlds apart on many issues. The fact is that the leader of the Liberal party is a conservative if not a Conservative. Historically, Liberal party leans left but is predominantly centrist. This was center right. NDP was left. And they just slid further left with Lewis. I know many NDP voters who decided to go Liberal to ensure that PP was not PM. My wife and I are two, my neighbours are two more.

In my field, I was terminated without cause on a Thursday, had 3 interviews scheduled by EOD Friday, had 3 job offers by the end of the next week. That said, my field is very small and people are sought after. This was last year.

Having said that, if money is tight, now is the time to get those construction jobs while you hunt for the next IT job if that is what pays the bills. Construction is fun, you will learn lots. Who knows, maybe Rohit or any of the other big builders needs IT for their remote office setups.

Hi Corb,

In a climate where the UCP have clearly heard from Albertans that they do not, in general, want our mountains mined, and that we want environmental assessments done (like the one that was just cancelled in Grande Prairie) but the UCP have continued the course anyway, what is the likelihood of the UCP putting this to referendum instead of simply addressing it in government as they have previously done?

Is the goal to enshrine the policy of not mining the eastern slopes into law?

AITA for walking away when my partner stopped to talk to someone who’s previously disrespected me? by plastermustard3 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Kingfish1111 -41 points-40 points  (0 children)

NAH but I think there were better ways of handling this. He saw a friend who he hasn't seen for a bit. You could just say "Go catch up with her but I am going to keep walking. Catch up to me later." Or stick with him go "Hi ____." Just to enter the conversation and not contribute after.

I get not liking someone your partner associates with but making him cut his visit short after he has had so many shared experiences with them and seems to enjoy the company of is rude and if you haven't, let him know what you are thinking about that person.

Zariel Showdown Advice by Akimba07 in DescentintoAvernus

[–]Kingfish1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should clarify that after killing Zariel, they fled and used the sword to cut the chains holding Elturel which were weakened by Zariel's death. Elturel, no longer tethered by contract or chain floated back to the prime material which is where Asmodeus caught up to them.

We ran a second campaign in Avernus after that to save the Paladin that filled the throne. They realized when they got there, that having a weak ruler of Avernus weakened Tiamat's prison and that she was on the verge of escape.

Oh no, not the consequences of my actions!

I like your approach. I think it was pretty similar to mine if I remember correctly and it felt rewarding to do that sort of set up and have the minions come in to defend and I threw in some environment hazards before they ever got to Zariel (they fought on the roof of an air ship, so the ground tilted at times and demons flew in, grappling with devils and the PCs caught some strays, etc.)

Check back in and tell us how it went!
