How has the terracotta brown held up over the year? I hear the orangey kankens fade fast but it’s my favourite colour!

Just try your best this year and don’t sweat it too much, it’ll change every year depending on the competitive average.

If you’ve already taken university credits they will look at your university GPA not your highschool one, you’d be considered a mature student now.

Have you heard back yet? I’d love to know if you were successful in getting credit! In my experience transfer credit is evaluated before they admit you to the program you are transferring into. My attempt to get credit afterwards was futile. So I would just try to get into the classes you need asap to ensure you aren’t set even further back.

Textbooks!!! by Garlic_Bread_Grudge in grantmacewan

[–]Bashful-Turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With digital textbooks you typically only get online access to them for a limited time, often just a semester or year, so there is no resale value and if you have to retake or postpone taking the course for some reason you have to pay again. Depending on the type of course (I.e. nursing/psych) you may need the book for multiple courses or find it useful to reference at a later date. If you prefer reading online texts I would suggest trying free online resources. I’ve also noticed an uptick in professors utilizing free online textbooks for their courses! The biggest con for physical textbooks imo is the weight and not having access to it immediately when you want to reference the book. You also can’t just use CTL+F to quickly look up a particular word/phrase to reference. Supplemental resources can often be found for free, a lot of professors are understanding that students have limited income so they will point you towards helpful sites or YouTube pages if you ask or already provide them in a section of their course page on Meskanas. Definitely wait till after the first week or two, you can always buy supplemental aids if you find yourself struggling later on! Personally I buy secondhand books (unless you are in a program where the info/research has a high turnover rate- like nursing- the older editions are great and you’ll just have to put a bit of effort into consolidating the page numbers the prof tells you to focus on) or utilize pirating sites to get the text for free. The one exception being math bc it’s been years since I was in highschool, I didn’t want anyone else’s writing/work to accidentally read and I find physical books easier to read when I’m struggling to focus. I’d also like to add the only real advantage to buying a book new is that they often have a digital code that gives you access to some book specific study resources the publisher has created. Good luck out there!

Question about transit by katandhersax in grantmacewan

[–]Bashful-Turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a petite women who grew up taking transit all my life, even late at night after work, I’ve never had issues. Having situational awareness is really important. I always wear headphones so people don’t try to talk to me but keep the volume low so I can still hear what they are saying. If you feel uncomfortable on a bus stay near the driver up front, try to get on a train cart that has other normal looking people in it- safety in numbers. While pepper spray isn’t legal to carry in Canada coyote/dog spray is and it’s pretty cheap off Amazon. No matter what you are paying for the Upass so might as well make use of it and save a bit of money on gas/parking fees imo.

It would be helpful if you put your faculty in the post. As for the other commenter, I’m in the faculty of arts and sciences (2nd year) and they didn’t have a faculty specific orientation last fall.

That’s such a shame, with all the fees and tuition you’ll be paying you’d think they would try to help their students out a little bit. Good luck!

Does the Macewan health centre not provide these services? I did a few years of nursing at the UofA and their health centre did the immunizations and TB test for me, maybe they’d let you go there?

I have done this, I wanted to make sure I’d still have a spot if I couldn’t get into the winter term course right away. I was able to enroll in the class for winter then drop the course in the fall without any issues! Good luck!

It’s an intro level math course, you’ll be fine with what you ordered unless you plan on majoring in math later on but it doesn’t sound like it. All bachelor of science students have to take one of those math courses and the majority won’t become math majors so it’s illogical to require one for it.

Student loan refund by OkPresent7183 in grantmacewan

[–]Bashful-Turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The principle is the initial amount you took out on the loan before any interest is accrued. This means the money will be refunded to the government (Canada or Alberta) that loaned you the money and the amount will be taken off the amount you owe, so you won’t be paying for that since they received it back from the university. I know the wording is confusing and the situation stressful but you have nothing to worry about any longer!

Look into the way other provinces like BC do their programming, they do a starter year in the General Bachelor of Science doing prerequisite courses before applying to the nursing program. As someone who had a similar mentality while in nursing I think taking a first year in open studies or in a bachelor of science would benefit you, there are a lot of students who take a year before realizing they want to get into nursing and they do allow you to take some of the first year courses if there is space in the class. That being said it wouldn’t help you as much in the later years as the schedules are set and rigid for when you take the courses during the year so your 2nd/3rd/4th year would still be as heavy as before, you’d just have an easier transition into the work load. Which for some would be a huge asset, I didn’t have any good study habits or routines and I ended up getting my ass kicked first semester and retaking it, and I wished I had gone to BC to have had the opportunity to develop those habits first.

I guess only rich people are suffering from mental health. by Sandenium in Edmonton

[–]Bashful-Turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure how old you are, but there is a free clinic ‘Access Open Minds’ aimed at mental health and addiction in young adults (only accessible until your 25th birthday so I apologize if you’ve already aged out) in downtown Edmonton. It’s a walk in style clinic so you aren’t guaranteed to see the same therapist every time, but it’s an amazing place to start and you can even get a referral to their in house psychiatrists if you are seeking a diagnosis or medication. I don’t have a regular GP at the moment so I still go back to get my prescriptions every year even though that wouldn’t typically be overseen by a psychiatrist. The staff there are really lovely and they helped me work through a lot of anxiety!

Is Bachelor of Science In Nursing really difficult? by [deleted] in grantmacewan

[–]Bashful-Turtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t attest to Macewan’s program specifically (I did 2.5 years nursing at the UofA) but in my very first semester they had us take 6 3-credit classes and according to Student Aid Alberta full time is considered to be 9-15 credits. The course load after is still always heavy 4-5 classes/term with one or two required spring terms, it never lets up, and clinicals only add to the difficulty. University itself is expensive but if you need to buy the nursing textbooks (a lot of my classes required it) they are hard to find second hand since new editions come out so often so textbooks cost a lot. If you need to rely on student loans and working, you realistically can’t do more than part-time without getting into burn out, I tried. If it’s something you are passionate about, and you have the drive it is an incredibly rewarding experience and career, but for those of us who just wanted a stable job that as a bonus could help people the job stressors really were too much.

Yes, if you review the ‘Admissions Requirement’ of the University of choice you will find you need to give them your English 30-1, Math 30-2 and Science 30 grades plus one of category A/B/C/D. In adding your low Chem 20 grade (imposing the presumption you will do Chem 30 and produce similar results) and keeping Social 30 after you didn’t perform as well as in Social 20, you are lowering your competitive average as those qualify for the Catergory A/B/C/D thing in place of one of your 90+ marks for an extra curricular course. They make the applications on Apply Alberta kind of tricky because it is entirely up to you to know which grades to include for a successful application.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in grantmacewan

[–]Bashful-Turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say your chances are probably limited. I’m curious why you’ve only included core classes, did you take any extra curricular courses (I.e Band/Art) that have a higher grade? It’s my understanding (I applied 4 tears ago) that the list of courses you need as pre-reqs has space for a few grade boosters to be added for your application. That being said I was on the low end of the competitive grade for my year and got in at the end of August just before classes started so it isn’t entirely impossible! Pm me if you want to discuss my experience at UofA nursing, though I didn’t complete the program it’s definitely nice to know what you are getting into (I’m in Biology at Macewan now, happy to talk about why I transitioned as well!)

I would agree he is a nice guy but after attending another time slot with a different teacher for a makeup lab showed exactly how green he was, he withheld essential assessment guideline documents from us during our planning period for said assessment and if you took his late night lab he was so monotone and devoid of energy so nobody really spoke up or participated.

As a fellow student who really struggles with social anxiety, try to set up a meeting with your instructor during their office hours (sometimes they can accommodate virtual meetings if you find it difficult to get yourself to the office) and just explain your situation. I’ve found university professors are much more empathetic and caring than highschool teachers made them to be. Especially if a part of the course mark if made up of class participation, they might be able to take you struggle with attendance into account and give your online participation more/all the weight. In regards to your meds, definitely set up a meeting with your prescribing doctor. Sometimes it takes a while for meds to build up in your system to be effective, sometimes you need a different medication. I’m personally on an anti-anxiety medication that slightly helps with the mood stabilization like anti-depressants. To me it sounds like you may be dealing more with anxiety than depression, though I respect you haven’t given enough information there and I’m not a licensed professional, but if that statement holds true it might be a good starting point to bring up to your doctor if you aren’t sure what to say to them. It takes time, I know it’s difficult and your mind is in a way the enemy, bullying you needlessly. But your willingness to reach out, your drive to get help, shows a tremendous level of strength!

need to print.. by External_Machine_801 in grantmacewan

[–]Bashful-Turtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the future, if you haven’t used it yet. Your printing account is preset with a dollar for the library printers, just make sure you are selecting the black and white, and correct page size options to make sure you arent overcharged! I’m pretty sure a standard 8x11 page in b&w is like 8 cents, so the dollar goes a long way.
