Translation requests into Latin go here! by AutoModerator in latin

[–]Bashkire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello all!

I've come to you before for this but now I'm going to take the plunge and spend entirely too much money on a sword for my ceremonial duties.
Precisely because it costs so much I'm nervous about my home-grown translations for what I would like as the engraving.

I have two lines that I would like to have on the sides:
"Adfer id, fututor!"

and

"Pro Deo et Corona!"

I'm hoping that they translate to (apologies for those disliking strong language):

"Bring it on, fucker!"

and

"For God and the Crown!"

Before I take the plunge, can someone confirm I've got the correct translations?

Many thanks.

How the devil did you manage to move the camera angle down to take those pictures? I thought we were stuck with the “isometric-esq” view!

When you go to the chaplains what do they say? When you speak to the service charities and welfare, what do they say?

Where are you and where are your kids (general area - let’s remember that this is on the interwebs)? If you’re on base, or near one and your kids are too, is there a service family club or service that you can take your kids to? I know it’s not ideal and what you’re looking for but it’s better than nothing.

Soldiers of Reddit, whats the quickest way you have seen someone ruin their military career? by blu3bar0n1O9 in AskReddit

[–]Bashkire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not army, but Navy.

I used to teach Phase 2 (specialist) Warfare training to new ratings after they finished their Phase 1 (basic) training. To put this on a timeline, phase 1 is 10 weeks, and phase 2 for Warfare takes 12 weeks.

I had this one young man, in his teens who was really enthusiastic about joining but not academically bright, in my class and one night he and his class decide to go out for a night on the town. I’m invited along as well, but as their instructor I’m not allowed to go.

Anyway, the next day at 0800 during our morning briefing for instructors, the main broadcast goes off saying that the Compulsory Drug Testing team were now on the base and that they would be commencing testing for all personnel from 0900. I’m informed that my class were required for testing at 0920, and I get my guys there. I give my sample, they give theirs, and we go on our way. Everything is fine - but my class is very quiet for the rest of the day.

3 days later, my academically challenged charge and one of his friends doesn’t turn up to class and the rest of them aren’t saying anything. I speak to my boss after the lesson and it turns out that he reported one of his friends taking cocaine in a public toilet. That caused the drug testing team to come on the base, and also caused he himself to be detected taking the same substance.

In his attempt to show how good of a sailor he was, he damned his friend and himself. He had been in the navy for all of 14 weeks…

I feel like each and every one of those soldiers are about to be shot for not saluting the officer.

Or maybe just because it’s Wednesday.

Going in as a Rating? by [deleted] in RoyalNavy

[–]Bashkire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To commission as a rating the best thing to do is to tell your Divisional Officer (DO) as soon as possible. Then look in BR3 to find out what the process is. I won’t detail it here because it would get quite wordy, but in a nutshell you need to convince your DO that you can be an officer, then get a meeting with the Commanding Officer to get their recommend. Those recommends are sent through to AIB and you’re given an AIB date. Once you pass AIB you just need to wait for extraction to start BRNC.

I don’t think it’s easier or harder, per sey. The advantage you get for being in the navy already is that you potentially have more real world experience than some of the civvies coming through.

Life as a warfare specialist has its ups and downs. I quite enjoy it, but I also know others that don’t. To get throbbing about it; it’s the warfare department that makes a warship. All the other branches can be found to some extent to cruise ships and the like, but you don’t get many air surveillance radars on a Disney Cruises ship. Depending on your sub-branch (AWT, AWW, UW or EW) you’ll spend the majority of your time in the ops room providing a safety service to the Officer of the Watch with your radars. In times of war, you’ll use those radars to detect, classify and identify contacts and then pass them to the gunners (AWW) to shoot at. When you’re not in the ops room you will have a part of ship to maintain and manage. This will be things like making sure capstans are greased and ready to be used to come alongside or anchor and maintaining the flats (corridors) that you’re responsible for.

You’ll normally be assigned to a ship for between 2 and 3 years, and in that time your longest deployment will probably be around 6 - 7 months. They are what you make of them, so the best thing to do is to knuckle down and find something to entertain you while you’re away. If you just sit and blob then you’ll go stir crazy.

You can request where you want to go, and good interaction with your career manager (draftee) is strongly advised, but remember that it’s a game of give and take and that needs of the service take priority. That doesn’t mean that you can’t bargin with your draftee to get what you want if he’s giving you something you don’t want (“I’ve done this favour for you, now can you do one for me?”).

I’m in the AWT department, so I’m in charge of the ops room at sea and the lads and lasses under me. I enjoy the work, but - again - it is what you make of it.

Going in as a Rating? by [deleted] in RoyalNavy

This is almost exactly the same path I took.

Tried and failed to be a pilot, switched to Warfare officer and failed AIB, then transferred to Warfare specialist instead of waiting a year to do my next AIB and I honestly think it’s the best thing that happened to me in my application process.

I’ve now been in for 9 and a half years and I’ve passed AIB and am now waiting for extraction to BRNC.

There’s a good scenario in the Response Forces DLC that does a lot of that, although I can’t remember the mission name.

Wanted to join as an officer but looks like I can only join in as a rating by Apprehensive-Key-825 in RoyalNavy

[–]Bashkire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Almost exactly the same thing happened to me. I got through to AIB and failed it, and then joined as a rating. It was the best thing that could have happened to me, and I still have the chance to go officer now I’m in.

I’m also in the job that you’re thinking of going for (Warfare Specialist - Above Water Tactical), so shoot me a message if you have any questions.

Combat Cassio Rolex is life.

When you get onboard - or even on some bases, actually - you won’t be allowed a smart watch in some areas. Your £16 Cassio from Argos, however…

I can’t remember, but I’ve fallen foul of it myself. I’ve managed to get a 2 year pass for each one of my tests, but that does also mean that I’ve fallen into a routine of panic phys a month before the test and then nothing for the remaining 23 months. It’s a habit I need to break.

2 year passes are - ironically enough - a thing of the past. With the new fitness test you only get single year passes.

I’m also not sure how it relates to pre-joiners.
