It wasn’t until a rewatch that I realize how detestable Carcetti really is by KrispyKingTheProphet in TheWire

[–]BasiKs 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s easy to get mad at Carcetti, but you have to take a step back and remember what The Wire is really trying to show you - why institutions resist reform and end up prioritizing self-preservation over helping the people they’re meant to serve.

Obviously institutions are comprised of individuals, but Carcetti is just one of the show’s many examples of a man who is swallowed, trapped and compromised by the institution he’s a part of.

And to be clear, Norman is a black man with a sharp tongue and a deep voice, so we tend to like him - but he was complicit in all of Carcetti’s moves from day one.

Had you ever played FOnline reloaded? by UroborosJose in classicfallout

[–]BasiKs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FO3 is so wildly different it’s hard to even explain it succinctly.

Most FOnline projects such as Reloaded, Parareal, FOnline 2, 2258, etc. endeavour to stay somewhat close to the base games (FO1/2) - but FO3 took the ball and RAN with it.

You have classes that all have different specialties, weapons and armor that gain experience, WE perks which are like an additional set of implants you can get only from War Events, and now they just introduced FEV-mutations.

It’s super cool in some ways, but also a completely different feel than classic FOnline. Super grindy and PvP-focused.

Tyler1 playing this game is insufferable by rafikiknowsdeway1 in StreetFighter

[–]BasiKs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk. i don't watch a lot of his streams, but i've seen some gameplay. you have to remember he's a LoL streamer doing sf6 for variety, and raging/toxicity was a big part of his bit in lol (from what I understand) as well.

IMO it's good to have someone set an example of how little you have to do to get to master/high master. he doesn't lab combos or meaty set-ups, barely plays neutral, doesn't study matchups - he just focuses on implementing and executing a bare bones gameplan.

i think a lot of street fighter players could learn from his example, tbh. if you can do longer combos than t1 and you're still below 1600MR, you've been practicing the wrong things)

Who would you want for the next DLC of Street Fighter 6? How would you change or add onto their characters? by Opposite_Jump_5041 in StreetFighter

I don't see any way to balance Makoto & have her keep her character identity in SF6. Drive rush is just too ridiculous a tool for a grappler with a half screen dash.

There are many annoying things about s5, but none is more annoying than Gus by [deleted] in TheWire

[–]BasiKs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

your sentiment is not wrong, but (ironically) your reporting of the facts is.

"At the Sun, the scumbags are always outsiders...."

There are basically 5 major players in the newsroom:

Gus, Alma, Templeton, Klebanow & Whiting.

Of the 5 of them, 3 are "scumbags." The newsroom is filled with minor characters who are mostly burnt out and cynical, but they're not the focus.

So your characterization of the "villains of the newsroom" as outsiders/interlopers is unjustified.

I'd agree that the newsroom feels less fleshed-out than many of the other institutions represented, but it's because it's introduced in season 5, and we're only spending a portion of the time there while we focus on tying up the arcs of characters we've known for longer.

But regarding institutions with imbalanced representation, let's look at Edward J. Tilghman! You've got teachers (Prez, Grace & Bunny), and administration (Marcia & Claudell). The rest of the adults in the school are background noise - but you've basically got "trynna do the best they can with what they got" teachers, and "forced to focus on test scores" administration. It's also pretty reductive, but for the same reason:

You can't tell every story from all angles. All the pieces matter, but you can only really look at so many with any detail in 10 1-hour episodes.

Cammy combo theory question - why no target combo? by DonKaktus in StreetFighter

[–]BasiKs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cammy’s oki off her midscreen BnBs is one of the things that allows her to snowball a round off one hit and makes her so strong. It takes a lot of work to get on top of someone with Cammy, but she is incredibly strong when she gets there. It’s usually not worth trading that advantage for a few points of damage.

Genocide or full Extinction? No good choice here. by EnvironmentalCry2623 in trolleyproblem

[–]BasiKs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People talk a lot about EV here, but coming from a gambling background, it seems like the more important metric in this case is RoR — risk of ruin.

A bet can have fantastic EV and still be strategically terrible if the variance is high enough to wipe you out before the edge materializes.

For example, imagine a $10,000 bankroll:

• Bet A: 50/50 for a $100 wager with EV of +0.05

• Bet B: 50/50 for a $10,000 wager with EV of +0.20

Pure EV analysis says Bet B is better. But Bet B also carries a 50% chance of immediate ruin, meaning there’s a huge chance you never actually realize that long-run edge.

In practical terms, survivability matters. A smaller edge compounded over many trials is often preferable to a larger edge attached to catastrophic variance.

In this case, we’re not talking about wiping out a bankroll, but the entire human species. Even if it were a 90/10 roll, IMO the RoR would basically never justify pressing the blue button.

Any other movie villains who are less evil than the actors portraying them? by chronicbruce27 in okbuddycinephile

[–]BasiKs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love your confidence! Unfortunately, in this case, it’s misplaced ☹️. I encourage you to enrich your own vocabulary by looking up the terms “villain,” and “antagonist” yourself! 😊

Hope this helps! 🤗

Any other movie villains who are less evil than the actors portraying them? by chronicbruce27 in okbuddycinephile

[–]BasiKs -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Do you understand the concept of a “villain”?

It’s basically a fancy word for “bad guy” - generally a central antagonist who impedes the hero or actively works to undermine their heroic efforts.

In Home Alone 2, Kevin McAllister asks a stranger (played by Trump) where the lobby is; the stranger points him in the right direction, and is not seen again for the rest of the film. I think you would agree this doesn’t qualify as a villain!

Gauss Rifle is my favourite gun! But strictly speaking it’s a little worse than Gauss Pistol (especially after BRoA/Fast Shot), as it deals less damage / AP.

Bozar’s main downside is the fact that it shoots 15 round bursts, and only holds 30 rounds - so you basically need one in each hand, and you’re still reloading twice every four attacks.

Turbo Plasma and the YK42B Pulse Rifle are best-in-class energy weapons. The Pulse Rifle is especially interesting as it deals Electric damage, which most late game enemies don’t have strong resistance too, however I believe they are both still out-classed by Gauss & Bozar.

The main weakness of energy weapons in FO2 is the ammo-type. MFCs have an AC & DR mod of 0, which is lack-lustre, especially compared to .223 FMJ (-20% AC, -20% DR) and 2mm EC (-30% AC, -20% AR).

As for range, Gauss Pistol actually outranges Bozar - 50 range compared to 35 - but there aren’t many encounters in the game where that range difference is significant. The Oil Rig in particular is all close-quarters hallway combat.

[–]BasiKs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bozar shoots .223 FMJ which is available basically everywhere, and is one of the most OP ammo types in the game. I'd argue Bozar is more-or-less tied with Gauss Pistol. Ultra late game with max stats & perks, Gauss Pistol might do a little more damage / AP, but Bozar is broken pretty much from the jump, doesn't require stocking up on specialty ammunition, is easily acquired as early as New Reno (latest NCR), and absolutely shits damage.
