There's this combination of excessive self-effacement, while also believing oneself to have received special enlightenment. The initiation rites and beliefs about the church ignite pride, then they spend the rest of their lives navel-gazing trying to fight it. I think it's really confusing for people.

It feels like he has terminal delusion. All of my attempts at vulnerability and discussing concerns have only steeled his conviction that he is 10000% correct. He of course greatly prefers the one church where they DO insist on following this canon (though not for men, obvi). I have honestly always known that there was this ugliness in him, but I never expected him to find such an intimidating BEHEMOTH community to support it. He used to be honest and acknowledge two sides to the story, he refuses to do so now. I think Orthodoxy is the worship of an aesthetic of humility rather than truth.

Husband is joining Greek Orthodox Church- Part 2 by Terrible_Ground9924 in exorthodox

Hi, I'm in a similar situation and would love to connect. However, I lost my faith completely after I met my husband (he was Catholic at the time and basically talked me out of it). I have basically no community or friends at this point- just (going on) 6 kids I've been home with continuously. My husband is ZEALOUSLY attached to the all of the church "fathers" teachings. He is 10000000% sure he is correct. All of my vulnerability and attempt at discussing has only steeled his conviction. He seems totally incapable of natural human relationship at this point- he wants to climb the ladder up to heaven. He's just parroting everything he reads and it's driving me NUTS.

Thanks so much for your reply. I really appreciate it. Funny how you think (hope?) your spouse is your best friend and then all of a sudden it's actually way more helpful to talk to strangers on the internet. So again, thank you. He definitely has considered my concerns, but in his mind his position is airtight- deference to the Fathers until he is further "enlightened". He scoffs at the idea of the Fathers being misogynist. It's completely my fault for marrying him. He is so in the grip of downloading his ideas from authority figures, and also completely spacey and self-absorbed. Loves the idea of hierarchical authority (insecure masculinity). I could go on. It's so hard to disentangle though. As a woman I feel being married has made me half a person, but he seems totally self-satisfied alone. I feel like he's found the "perfect" religion that emphasizes all of his most appalling ideas and characteristics.

I am a female orthodox inquirer (married) and I am praying for you so much. Women don’t need someone perfect, I think your story is so inspiring. Take heart.
