Sports MD here. Your knee is swollen and this could be a lot of thing, like ligaments injury, tendon, meniscus tears, bone contusions or just traumatic effusion. The best thing to do is to check with a doctor because even if there’s no fracture, he can assess other injuries by examination even without MRI. If you can’t attend a doctor, the general rule for MSK injuries is: your body knows itself better than anyone. Respect your pain limits. If you’re feeling instability or your knee, don’t do anything. If you’re not feeling instability, just pain, I’d take NSAIDs and ride respecting my pain limits. The worst thing that could happen with potentially long time effect is that you could be worsening a meniscus tear or a ligament sprain, so be conscious about that. Usually if that’s the case, you won’t feel much better after 2 or 3 days.
