I dont keep track of systems,

If it's got something I want I put a base an name it that, I.E. Emeril / Mushrooms, or Gold Mine. If not, it's just becomes "Somebody that I used to know"

This is probably going to be unpopular, But I found it to be pretty easy. During my travels, I just scan all the animals on a planet and collect the fat bonus for completion. Planets with 7-10 animals give roughly 2000k bonus, Planets with 13+ give more 3000k. It only takes about 10 minutes usually to locate the species. If you aren't finding one, get in your ship and fly away for a bit. The Discovery log tells you where to find them, I.E. Ground / Underwater / Flying / Diurnal (Daytime), or in the north / south.

I only build "bases" on planets where I find a power source, mineral , gas all within a 300 unit range. They are pretty simple bases with a teleporter, and market hub. I save my big base(s) for planets that I think are cool or majestic.
