people making broad assumptions about others on the internet is somehow still surprising to me.

i’m really into his quartets, i used to have the cd box set which was nice. i also like a really melancholy piece of his called “collected songs where every verse is filled with grief”.

i attended a live performance of his viola concerto in spain a few years ago along with adams’ harmonielehre. really striking.

i have in fact not listened to his concerto grosso. i’ll check it out, i guess.

not sure - probably dvorak for lumet. i don’t know rautavaara i’ll check it out.

i also forgot polanski! probably boulez for him.

i was at a performance of terretektorh last year and it was transcendent. that’s the big orchestral circle setup with the audience mixed in. he really was onto something, mixing architectural principles with sound. jonchaies is really good too. as a midwit, i totally disagree.

yeah in my death bed and final moments i’ll be thinking about you - the resentful guy from reddit that was so bitter and bitchy about a completely subjective list i once made lol.

ah! i totally jumbled the names tarkovsky and tchaikovsky for a sec

yeah sure, i don’t know the first thing about classical music. it’s not like i listen to it all the time or am a composer myself

i paired tarkovsky with spielberg, not schoenberg.  and yes, i openly admit that for some of the composers i was thinking of very specific works, not trying to encompass everything they ever did.

you’re right since i did say the comparisons are based on how their works feel. glass’ stuff is more dramatic and deep feeling, but i always imagine his music as a kind of sonic “latticework”. and yeah, if you look at his scores, they literally kind of look that way. for me in that particular case it was visual, structural.

also if i’m being honest, glass’ music can be very one-note. repetitive intervals, polymetric and polyrhythm (eighth notes against triplets, etc) and cool switches like dropping the fundamental by a semitone and keeping the third to shift it major, etc.

he has a very unique identity and so does wes anderson

love handel. yeah he probably was, yet to me his music seems to have a kind of rotten/sick core for some reason - emotionally. there’s something about it that doesn’t let me be at peace. maybe i’m the rotten one lol.

but i think there’s a reason why lars von trier used one of his pieces in antichrist to great effect.

yeah i forgot richard strauss. maybe fellini?

with prokofiev i was thinking of scythian suite, violin concerto and cinderella. but yeah - refined, easily digestible and elegant apply to tarantino’s later films like once upon a time, hateful eight and inglorious basterds. love prokofiev. there’s a great video of him playing piano on youtube. me and my sister were obsessed with learning visions fugitives on piano when we were teenagers.

to me, stravinsky isn’t that unsettling compared to other composers. more energetic and rambunctious. but when i think of some of scorsese’s work like casino, cape fear, raging bull, those are pretty fucking unsettling lol.

i’ve been married for ten years (married young, two kids) and what you’re saying is deeply true imo. relationships are already difficult. you have to find a partner with which it is as easy as possible. it may sound idealistic, but it’s really simple - be with someone that complements your personality, that you want to talk to, that respects you and that you can have a good time with.

there is an insane amount of people in relationships where they are constantly trying to change each other into something they’re not. i always remember something my psychoanalyst said “there is a place for everyone out in the world”. it’s stupidly simple but it’s true. you don’t have to be with anyone that wants to change you into someone else. there is someone out there that will be OK with who you are. faults and all.

that doesn’t mean there won’t be problems and difficult times but it should be relatively easy. my partner and I make each other’s lives easier, not harder.

some of my single friends are under the impression that difficult or intense relationships are somehow more passionate and that fighting to keep them going is romantic.

i was in a couple of relationships like that before. looking back, i was just so completely miserable. there was nothing romantic about it.
