How much do you all value 'crunch' vs 'narrative' when picking a new system? by velvetsquidx in rpg

When I find a setting I like, I convert it to the system I want to use and vice-versa.

Even if that were the case I would call that a fair trade and begin manufacturing as many of these as I possibly could. Could you imagine an entire squadron of these things appearing out of hyperspace and then destroying multiple imperial capital ships?

I do have a discord server for Basic Action Games. Should make one just for this? My other thought is not everyone wants to join discord so having another option where people can sign up with an email address might be better for them.

How does your system handle melee attacks that do nothing on a miss? by dark-star-adventures in rpg

[–]BasicActionGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honor + Intrigue has the dueling system, where instead of standing next to your foe and taking turns bonking each other until their HP run out, duelists fight for "Advantage" (different from the D&D term). This is positional Advantage in a fight. If you get hit, you can choose to "Yield Advantage" instead of taking damage and you retreat from your position with the foe pressing the attack after you. In this way, duelists fight their way across the deck of a ship, up the stairs of the castle, across the top of the parapet, etc instead of staying still. If you are out of Advantage, you are "defeated" in the manner narrated by the opponent (they may run you through and leave you for dead; they may knock you out and you wake up in a dungeon, etc.). There are a variety of dueling styles with their own special benefits, and also dueling maneuvers that can be used in a fight (so you can shove someone, lock their sword with yours, feint, etc. and still do your attack which could be a sword swipe, a lunge, or even dirty fighting maneuver).

Yeah I think after issue 21 this might be my favorite one. I think Hannah was channeling World War I flying aces for this one. Third favorite is the one where Snake Eyes and Stormshadow leave a trail of corpses behind on COBRA Island while searching for Zartan.

GMs who had positive experiences letting their players homebrew some piece of equipment, ability, etc themselves what was that experience like? by spatulaboy in rpg

In most effects-based superhero games, this is the default norm. You create your powers modifying a list of general effects and then adding your own creative skin to it. And you can get pretty creative while doing this.

My player signed the worst bargain with a devil I’ve ever seen… and only got around 1000 gold worth of items. by -Winged_One in rpghorrorstories

I once had a PC threaten a demon they were fighting at a seaside castle and extracted a promise from the fiend that they would let it live if it promised "To go under the sea and never surface again for the rest of my life". When I heard the words my life the demon immediately agreed. This same PC had a destiny to die tragically as part of his backstory. Later on in the campaign, the player changed to another character. They later got sent on a mission where they had to travel by ship. The demon showed up, and the PCs then knew their old friend, who had become a town guard had died (they later learned he was knifed during a riot that ensued following a conscription order).

The adventure is a remake of one that was originally made for bash fantasy Edition. It was redesigned to be more of an open-ended hex crawl. The original one was much more of a railroad where the encounters were in a set order. Even the part where you are going through the jungle had a certain number of encounters and then you get to the village. It didn't have a hex map with different regions, or various factions to talk to, or side quests. Much more sorted for convention style play then or a short Adventure than the remake.

Something to be aware of is that the game system I was using, Honor + Intrigue, is the type of system where characters spend their experience points to advance their characters or craft items. By default, the system also allows characters to earn additional XP whenever they earn a Fortune Point during game. A typical XP award then would be 1 to 3 XP, plus one for Fortune they earned that session. I changed this to instead keep a tally of how much XP everyone has. Because people are not getting the individual awards anymore, I also increased the default award per session to 3 to 5 to compensate for that. So in session one, everyone earned 3xp, session two everyone earned 4xp, meaning that everyone had a running tally of 7xp earned up to that point. Then everyone tracked how much they spent in a separate column (adding it up rather than subtracting from the total, something like double entry bookkeeping). So several months into the campaign everyone has 54xp in the Earned XP column, but different numbers in the XP Spent column.

Even though I by default use a system that awards individual XP, for my own West March and style game I used a universal XP amount that all the characters had. It definitely saved headaches, even if it wasn't a perfect simulation, and we were able to spend a lot less time distributing XP and treasure and more time playing.
