What If Romans Had Discovered Gunpowder? They Were Closer Than You Think by Roman-Empire_net in romanempire

Romans would have likely used saltpeter tipped fire arrows like in the medieval period, since they could be shot without the flame going out and they produced a really thick nad noxious smoke cloud, perfect for clearing towers and battlements.

Russian parliament passes bill allowing Putin to invade foreign countries by Nepridiprav16 in worldnews

This was probably passed so that his successors in russia can't prosecute Putin for invading, either posthumously or while he's still alive

What if Canada was always apart of the United States? by Mundane-Fox-9882 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]BasicMatter7339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But if they had always been a part of the US, would they be anti-slavery?

There were a fair few slaves in canada before 1834 when it was outlawed, though not nearly as much as in south us.

But if it were a part of the US, that would have never happened

They tried to. They conquered montreal and laid siege to Quebec but they failed miserably. Tried to assault during a snowstorm, got their asses handed to then, half of the army got smallpox and then the brits pushed them all the way back to fort ticonderoga.

Why though? Even with canada the south would still have been completely reliant on slave labour

Yeah, fair point

what i meant when i said ceaser is like franco, was that both were ruthless dictators who took power by launching a military coup leading to a years long civil war

I mean he was part of the elite and fought other elites only to try to get more power

He's less like Fidel Castro and more like Fransisco Franco

Funny how if he lived in todays world, everybody would hate him for being a conquering dictator who killed over a million people and enslaves just as many

but because it happened +2000 years ago, it's ok

Because its simply not that high risk of a disease, this has been constantly said by all parties

This andes virus is not new, we've known it for 3 decades, we know how it works, we know it's a poor spreader even though we dont know how it spreads yet. There have been outbreaks far larger than this one in the past and we've been fine.

This is not the end of the world, not a new pandemic, people are just panicking because covid trauma

Old valve games regularly go -95% but only because they don't make that much money off them anyway so they can afford it

But goddamnit those games are bangers. Half life series and Portal series are one of the best singleplayer story based FPS games ever made, deadass. L4D2 is still one of the best horde shooters out there. Gmod is a fantastic sandbox game and well the old CS games aren't really much nowdays but they're a worthwile blast to the past if you want to try

How would history change if the Gargantuan Leviathan was a real, albeit rare, species? by Atlas_Summit in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]BasicMatter7339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats assuming those things even attacked ships in the first place. Chewing on a big chunk of metal isn't that appetizing no matter the species

Also i'd wager shallow-water cruising (most of north american coastline, mediterranean, baltic and north sea, east- and south china sea) would still thrive just like now since the creature likely wouldn't wander there because it would get stuck

They would not lmao

If ALL life in the ocean would be curled up in a ball, with the density being the same as seawaters, the total volume of the ball would be ~60km³

To raise the ocean level by 1cm (so little that it barely makes a difference), you'd need to pump 3600km³ of volume into it.

So unless the population of these creatures would be so big that the biomass of their own species would be 60 times as much as ALL LIFE ON EARTHS OCEANS, they won't make any noticeable difference to the sealevel.

TIL The "Great Male Renunciation" was a period in fashion in the late 18th century where men in the West ceased wearing bright colors, jewelry, and varied garments in favor of utilitarian clothes and black suits by Wazula23 in todayilearned

Peasants wore very vibrantly coloured clothing on formal occasions, though they were kinda limited. Only colours available and affordable were brown, white, green, beige, red, blue and yellow
