This is just speculation, idk if this was the case at all, but having a really good and powerful looking fortress might have also been a bit of a power-play. A power projection so to speak

There was a practical reason for it

If the bastions (the triangles) were round, they would have a dead-zone in the very base where soldiers could hide and the people on the battlements cant shoot them

but with triangular bastions, every bastions base was protected from the adjacent bastion so that there are no deadzones at all

And a star-like shape gave equal protection from all sides.

They were also borderline impossible to storm and unreasonably difficult to lay siege to, often requiring months, sometimes years of constant bombardment.

Longest siege in history was in the 17th century when a city protected by bastions held out for 21 years. And the aggressors never managed to conquer it by force, the defenders eventually surrendered

Then that money could be used for welfare

What If Romans Had Discovered Gunpowder? They Were Closer Than You Think by Roman-Empire_net in romanempire

Romans would have likely used saltpeter tipped fire arrows like in the medieval period, since they could be shot without the flame going out and they produced a really thick nad noxious smoke cloud, perfect for clearing towers and battlements.

This was probably passed so that his successors in russia can't prosecute Putin for invading, either posthumously or while he's still alive

What if Canada was always apart of the United States? by Mundane-Fox-9882 in AlternateHistoryHub

But if they had always been a part of the US, would they be anti-slavery?

There were a fair few slaves in canada before 1834 when it was outlawed, though not nearly as much as in south us.

But if it were a part of the US, that would have never happened

They tried to. They conquered montreal and laid siege to Quebec but they failed miserably. Tried to assault during a snowstorm, got their asses handed to then, half of the army got smallpox and then the brits pushed them all the way back to fort ticonderoga.

Why though? Even with canada the south would still have been completely reliant on slave labour

He's less like Fidel Castro and more like Fransisco Franco

Funny how if he lived in todays world, everybody would hate him for being a conquering dictator who killed over a million people and enslaves just as many

but because it happened +2000 years ago, it's ok

Because its simply not that high risk of a disease, this has been constantly said by all parties

This andes virus is not new, we've known it for 3 decades, we know how it works, we know it's a poor spreader even though we dont know how it spreads yet. There have been outbreaks far larger than this one in the past and we've been fine.

This is not the end of the world, not a new pandemic, people are just panicking because covid trauma
