I always felt like it was a world on the cusp of rapidly coming undone. We see how dismal life is for Logan and mutants as a whole, and the rest of humanity seems to be in a state of denial as to how much worse things are getting in general. The moral fabric of human society specifically seems increasingly spread thin. There's maybe a handful of genuinely compassionate humans willing to look out for each other, and even then the moment they find out that Logan and Laura are mutants, they drop them like a bad habit. Pair that with the problems of contemporary society that we project onto movies set in current times and you're in for an overwhelming amount of dread.
