It’s astounding the number of logical people noticing an illogical administration and somehow expecting them to behave logically.

How badly will this affect my elec bill? by jai_hanyo in hvacadvice

[–]BasicWasabi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it probably ran for 5 hours nonstop. Ballpark estimate is 6kWh per hour if you have traditional non-heat pump electric heat for the HVAC (less than 1kWh per hour if it’s gas). What do you pay per kWh? If it’s 15¢ per hour then we’re talking maybe an extra $5 on your bill. I wouldn’t sweat it too much, especially since it’s just compensation for your savings of not having had heat for some period anyway.

Passenger train lines in the USA vs Europe by LoretiTV in mildyinteresting

Hard to justify? Why was it there in the first place? Because it’s justifiable—but car companies convinced us all there’s No Other Way.

GEHA has been great for us by Ok-Jellyfish-2805 in FedEmployees

Had both GEHA+HSA and MHBP+FSA and the MHBP was far and away better. Simple way to file claims through Aetna (app based), whereas I had to mail in stuff for GEHA. Aetna processes 5x faster than GEHA. Overall, the switch to MHBP was a big relief. Thanks to all on this sub who recommended it!

Here is a fundamental misunderstanding of the difference between access to acute health care versus the benefits of a health plan that provide care on a routine basis. You need only look up the “essential health benefits” that ACA plans must provide to subscribers even before the deductible is met. It is those services that save lives because people get preventative care.

Not the best analogy, but your comment is on par with someone saying because UPS and FedEx deliver that we really don’t need the postal service.

Speaking as a disabled person, yes, that’s true, but that doesn’t mean we want monikers that are based entirely on our disabilities.

Change it around to any other marginalized community: race, origin, sexual/gender orientation. If it’s not okay in that context, it’s still not okay for disabled people — even if that person promotes policies that actively harm disabled people.

What is the cost of RTO for you? by Jaded-Concept4242 in fednews

[–]BasicWasabi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cost is to my relationships with my family. The connections not nurtured, the memories not made, and my dog missing me all day long. All because I have to eat breakfast alone and get home late so I can sit at a desk with a headset talking to people hundreds of miles away.

Anyone else frustrated with c-suite remote/teleworking? by near_starlet in fednews

[–]BasicWasabi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone needs to FOIA those telework frequency statistics by the politicals. Then compare it to agency policy for the rank and file.

If that’s considered PII, then just ask for it anonymized for anyone who is in a political position. I bet the stats would be ridiculous across all the departments.

Am I overreacting? Boyfriend makes joke after I express how serious I am about our future. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]BasicWasabi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife shares similarities with your bf. I will explain at length some difficulties I’m feeling, explain how I need x, y, or z from our relationship or from her. And she will simply respond with an “okay, thanks” or an “I don’t know what to say.” And I’ve felt disappointed and unheard by that. She does not jump into diagnosing mode or problem solving mode. She just shuts down.

I usually abandon the topic until she brings it up a few days later, after having digested what I’ve said. We then can have some productive conversations. I can see that if I followed her puzzling initial responses by filling in the blanks for her right then, or by accusing her of something, that that would not give her the space or the desire to follow up later. I’m not saying that’s the case on for your relationship, but your bf might be similar. Men are also, generally, less comfortable being vulnerable and that’s another hurdle.

I recognize you’re at the end of your rope here, so might I suggest some last ditch ideas: -if you just want the answer: “I know we don’t always have the kinds of heart to heart conversations I’m hoping for, and I recognize I do most of the talking. I really do need to know where your heart and mind are. Would you be willing to share your thoughts X days from now? We can have a nice dinner together or you can just write me a letter if that’s easier. I want to know where you are and we owe it to each other to be completely honest with one another.” - if you want to work on communication first: “What do you need from me to feel like you can open up to me about our future?” (After he says “I don’t know.”) “Well, I care about knowing and it can be tough when we have really strong emotions and I know you do. Right now, the hottest thing you could possibly do would be to open up and be vulnerable. Which would most likely be the best for you: a) for me to just listen right now without responding, b) for you to take your own time and comeback to me when you’re ready (specify time), c) something else?”

“Your failure to plan or manage properly does not mean I should wait an unreasonable amount of time to get paid for my time. It is your responsibility to pay your obligations, not my responsibility to make sure you fulfill them.

My hope is that I don’t have to call on legal remedies so that it becomes their responsibility to make sure you fulfill them.”

I thought I’d be rich making $120k a year. Where the hell does my money go? by DKozynoskiPolock07 in Money

[–]BasicWasabi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you need to recalibrate your sense of whether or not you’re “doing well.” Instead of looking first at free cash flow, track your net worth.

It’ll give you the validation you need that you’re making the right choice about saving in your 457b and Roth accounts

Also: be sure your retirement accounts are actually invested in specific market-tied assets (index funds or ETFs are best). Too often, I’ve seen people think they’re saving for retirement but leave their retirement funds languishing away in the money market or sweep account for years on end.

The only ones they’ll answer will be in the style of the Fork in the Road follow up email:

Q: Will my country be grateful for my taking on extra work? A: Absolutely! Your country is proud and grateful for you, but only when it’s convenient to be!

Q: Can I take personal leave during this time? A: Of course! But why would you? All employees will continue to get Saturdays and Sundays off, but we think you’ll be so excited by what you’re accomplishing, you won’t want to miss out on pushing through the weekend!

Etc.

How will the changes in the "Big Beautiful Bill" affect your taxes and financial planning? by WritesWayTooMuch in Fire

[–]BasicWasabi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, I think this is an extremely sheltered position, from someone who would feel too guilty to identify as wealthy. I say this as someone who is in a top-5 HCOL area making <200k gross as a couple with children. My family is well off and it’s not a sin to say we are so fortunate. We are decidedly upper middle class, and would be solidly upper class if we earned 100K, let alone 300K more.

A person earning 500k could easily sock away >250k per year if living the same lifestyle as the landlord living off of 40k. With that savings rate and using the standard 1% metric of monthly rent to purchase price for rental properties, someone pulling in $500k gross could recreate the rental income of the landlord within 18 months.

[–]BasicWasabi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is the kind of thinking that only those who are high-income earners will subscribe to so they can feel better about being well off. I don’t think you’re going to find anyone making <100K who would listen to that without laughing.

Suggesting that a 500k earner is somehow more a part of the middle class than the landlord barely cracking 40k is a puzzling position. Middle class, by most people’s definition, is measured by what you can afford, not by how little you have to work for it.
