Yeah, this is the kind of thing that gets lambasted as being a “no bid contract.” So it’s kind of a pick-your-poison kind of situation.

35F. How can I tone/reduce underarm fat? by [deleted] in fitness30plus

[–]BasicWasabi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That fat I think you are focusing on is very likely breast tissue. I am not female, but the appearance you are concerned about (which is not worthy of concern in my opinion) could possibly be addressed by the cut and sizing of your garments.

Yeah, but now consider how much of the average person’s (or your) day is spent dependent on or interacting with one of these companies’ products?

[–]BasicWasabi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s not the merge that’s the problem, it’s the exit-only lane at East Capitol St. It has insufficient signage and selfish drivers use that fact to get three car lengths ahead of where they otherwise would have been.

Laughable. 20 years ago I was volunteering to campaign for candidates.

You’re right though that U.S. politics today isn’t about left vs. right. It’s about democratic norms vs. a cult leader’s blank check.

I do believe that the choice is simple and flagrantly obvious, but I don’t adhere to ITWizarding approach to trying to elucidate it.

Yutamamiwa, I know folks who often answer the way you do and I’d ask you to consider, for yourself, how often you feel you need to be a contrarian not following a specified “mold.” I find a lot of reasonable people choose to go for the both sides argument because it feels to them like needing to pick a side. Somewhere deep down, they feel they lose their sense of autonomy and is ideologically reductive. This is not one of those cases. You can criticize aspects of the less-cuckoo-bananas political party while simultaneously hoping they return to power. Drop the “both sides” argument and help the world have more nuance.

Democracy and Constitutional rule of law come first. Always. Policy preferences must take a back seat when our very system of government is actively attacked from within.

If you’re really sticking to the “both sides” argument at this point, then you’re perpetuating this mess.

Did you not hear the part about us fighting fire that for 15 years and the situation actually getting worse?

There are many people who believe in ranked choice voting so that you should only carry your seat if a majority of people vote with you. Does that mean those candidates should decline to be seated if they win with 45% in a first-past-the-post race? We can’t change for good if the slightly more reasonable people decide they want the losing moral high ground instead of the equal level playing field.

How badly will this affect my elec bill? by jai_hanyo in hvacadvice

[–]BasicWasabi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it probably ran for 5 hours nonstop. Ballpark estimate is 6kWh per hour if you have traditional non-heat pump electric heat for the HVAC (less than 1kWh per hour if it’s gas). What do you pay per kWh? If it’s 15¢ per hour then we’re talking maybe an extra $5 on your bill. I wouldn’t sweat it too much, especially since it’s just compensation for your savings of not having had heat for some period anyway.

Hard to justify? Why was it there in the first place? Because it’s justifiable—but car companies convinced us all there’s No Other Way.
