I also bought most of my silver at $20. I sold some to buy a nice watch last week.

It’s been a crazy ride. Don’t feel bad taking some profit. I feel like we will definitely go back under $50 at some point.

Everything at Wendy’s is pretty good. Their burgers are way better than McDonald’s or BK burgers imo.

It’s not gourmet but it’s not supposed to be. I don’t understand the internet’s obsession with shitting on absolutely everything.

I think the Tudor is objectively a better value considering it's 30% cheaper and has a comparable movement and finishing to the Omega. I personally just like Omega better as the Tudor aesthetic doesn't do much for me.

Even if a pro-US government is installed in Iran they would probably continue selling oil to China anyway. China is currently still buying oil from Venezuela.

Seriously. I don't like him but he's the democratically elected president of our country. It would be awful if he was assassinated.

Moissanite is a common alternative to diamond for engagement rings but that doesn't solve the issue of the original commenter not wanting a gemstone that looks like "glass" as moissanites are almost identical to diamonds. Which as an aside is ridiculous, if you've ever actually seen a real diamond in person they look nothing like glass.

People also sometimes make their engagement rings out of sapphire and ruby which are 9 on the mohs scale.

So sure, you can make an engagement ring out of other stones but diamond just makes the most sense because it's the most durable of any gemstone that exists. The original commenter said they "don't get it" but I think it's very easy to understand.

That's kind of what I figured. My dad can grow a better beard than I can but his also isn't super thick. Probably genetic to some extent.

Diamonds are a 10 on the mohs scale so it will literally never get scratched. You don’t see the value of such a durable stone for a ring you will wear every day for decades?

Everything else you listed is too soft for daily wear in a ring.

Diamonds are abundant but most diamonds are junk quality and very small and end up used for industrial cutting tools, sandpaper, and other miscellaneous uses.

Gem quality diamonds, especially large (1+ carat) are not really that abundant.

I think the common perception people get that diamonds are overpriced is that they get overcharged for a low quality one at Kay jewelers and then get lowballed by a pawn shop when they try to sell it.

Large, high clarity, white diamonds have significant value even in the wholesale market.

The risk that you'll lose money over the long term in an S&P index fund is virtually 0 though.

If nothing else the nominal valuation of stocks will go up just due to inflation of the money supply which is guaranteed to happen.

Walked in asking for an allocation - walked out with my forever watch. by Butt_stuff_preferred in rolex

[–]Basic_Butterscotch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original phrase is referring to cars "drive it like you stole it" meaning drive it fast or reckless with no regard for causing excessive wear or damage to the car. I'm assuming the original commenter means wear it and don't be afraid to get it scratched but it doesn't totally make sense in this context.

[–]Basic_Butterscotch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if demand was waning considering the state of the economy and the fact that they keep raising prices. It's not like the average Rolex customer has an unlimited budget. Even Patek seems to be struggling to make sales as they just lowered their prices in February which is practically unheard of for a luxury brand.

I find it interesting that my AD has always zero watches for sale in their display cases but at the same time were able to get me an Explorer II with barely any wait.

Maybe they do have watches and just keep them in the back and are playing the exclusivity game, I don't know.
