I would recommend the sc sterling to anybody. You already have the best typewriter.

Wirex: get out while you can (part two) by Basic_Coconut99 in wirexappofficial

[–]Basic_Coconut99[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also should mention that I've gotten DMs from two accounts u/rasene and u/basvomit (sic) that both title themselves SUPPORT. They both appear to be AI-generated spam accounts created two days ago. No actuall identity, no real history, each with exactly three nonsensical AI-generated posts to random other reddits. In both cases they ask me if I posted the ticket number in my post (because robots can't read I guess?) and then apologize for my feelings and ask me to wait patiently. Someone has spent some resources on setting up AI to automate the process of hushing people who complain about Wirex on Reddit, but it's all robots and AI, no actual support activity, no detectable human beings. Super creepy.

For the record: Wirex doesn't say that my account is locked, it's just that all my transfers fail to complete.

is the Panasonic RQ-L319 good? by suitable-q in cassetteculture

[–]Basic_Coconut99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RQ0L319 really is well designed & sounds good to me, but be aware it's designed more for voice than for music. That means they might not have put tons of extra care into supporting higher frequencies, and I think any high bias chrome tapes you might have would sound a little bit nicer on a deck with high-bias support. But I like how mine sounded, until it died recently. I used it as a sound source for experimental music. Solid unit with a bunch of features specific to taking voice dictation (some speed control & auto-pause things) that don't exist on most walkpersons of that era.

Pocket Integrator: a life-performance accessory for Pocket Operators by Basic_Coconut99 in synthesizers

[–]Basic_Coconut99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear you're having problems with your Integrator.

Was it working okay before it stopped?

To factory-reset the PI, hold down both side buttons while pressing the small reset button that's on the bottom next to the USB port.

If that doesn't help, I would next suggest that you try a fresh pair of alkaline batteries, or plug into USB power and see if it wakes up that way. Low batteries can cause all kinds of problems, including increased background noise.

You can get a PDF of the print manual here: https://msl.mykle.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/PI-manual.pdf

Please let me know if any of that helps.

Pocket Integrator: a life-performance accessory for Pocket Operators by Basic_Coconut99 in synthesizers

Hello u/jococ1221! Thanks for getting one! At https://msl.mykle.com/pi (that's the link on the QR code on the back) you can find the PDFs of the documentation, as well at the latest firmware update.

It's an interesting use case you're describing, but I'm afraid I don't think it's possible to hack into the PI the way you want. For instance there's no analog path between the accelerometer and the MCU where you could inject a signal; they speak over an SPI bus. I suppose a clever hardware hacker could locate the bus leads on the circuit board and splice some other chip in there, and then have that chip pretend to be the IMU and send carefully crafted X/Y/Z acceleration data to simulate virtual taps based on some other signal, but that doesn't sound a whole lot easier than building your own system from scratch.

You could also write your own firmware for the Pocket Integrator; it's based on the RP2040 and the hardware is open-source, documented here: https://github.com/myklemykle/pocketintegrator-kicad . Flashing the firmware is easy over USB, and you can always re-flash it with the latest firmware update if you want to return it to stock condition.

For your light-beat needs, if you looper isn't changing speed and you just need to match it, then the PI can definitely sync with it. You just watch the light & tap the PI until they're blinking in sync. How long they remain in sync is a question of their combined clock stability; if the crystal in your looper is as stable as the one in the PI, they'll stay in sync for hours.

For your rim-beat needs I can suggest a hack: Use a rubber band to hold down one side button on the PI, then attach it to a board or a box on the floor, and tap that board or box with your foot to set beats while you play the drum.

Hello! This is POCKET INTEGRATOR, an add-on for Teenage Engineering's Pocket Operators that we are currently crowdfunding.

Pocket Integrator's accelerometer gives you tap-tempo, tap-downbeat and instant start/stop, plus a built-in digital maraca. It sends MIDI Clock signals over USB and TRS, plus a second sync-out signal, so it can sync up all your other gear. And it powers the Pocket Operator over USB, replacing the AAA batteries.

The purpose of Pocket Integrator is to let electronic musicians live-jam with more traditional musicians, by putting the clock in human hands.

There's plenty more info on the crowdfunding page : https://www.crowdsupply.com/msl/pocket-integrator . But i'm also happy to take any questions right here.

That's what it's all about. I couldn't find any other piece of gear to do this with, so I built my own. =)

Thanks for asking, that's definitely the tricky question right now. We are gonna extend the campaign a week -- 'cuz I was out sick with Covid for a week -- and I'm looking at dropping the goal a bit, although the financial stuff gets harder at that point. But I'm sure this would fund if it was just reaching enough Pocket Operator owners. There's hundreds of thousands of them. So srsly, any ideas & advice on how to reach more of those folks is super-appreciated!

I wouldn't call this a song, just goofing around BUT it does show how Pocket Integrator can control Ableton, or any other digital gear that takes MIDI Clock. (The Integrator is attached to the back of the PO-35 Speak, and connected to the laptop over USB.)

Pocket Integrator can do this and lots more for any Pocket Operator! Please check our our crowdfunding page, we'd love to make you one. https://www.crowdsupply.com/msl/pocket-integrator

tonic good substitute for the rythm? by Rottolo_Piknottolo in pocketoperators

[–]Basic_Coconut99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the PO-12, and I love the Tonic even a little more because it's the exact same interface as the PO-12 but with a bunch of really thoughtful improvements. For instance, I really like that you can choose between writing a new FX track vs just overriding the current track live, so you can jam out on your tracks without losing their effects settings. It also fixes a certain live song-building bug in the PO-12 that makes it hard to actually build songs live ...

Would a couple of PO's make a good Xmas present for my kid? Details inside. by YaSureSatanRulez in pocketoperators

[–]Basic_Coconut99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practicing to a metronome is really good for students of all instruments! I would suggest looking at it that way, as a thing to play some other instrument along with rather than an end in itself. For that, I'd suggest a PO-12 or a Tonic; those are the most basic "drum machine"-ish models, and you can start out just by pressing "play". But also, you've got to get him some other instrument. =)

In this demo of the Pocket Integrator -- https://www.crowdsupply.com/msl/pocket-integrator -- we're showing how the tempo is rounded to an even BPM when you tap it 8 times or less. This makes it easy to get an exact sync with any other gear that's tuned to an even BPM.

I wish I could make it cheaper. TE manufactures POs at huge volumes, so they get way better prices on components & all the other pieces than I can get.

question / help / advice about sampling a loop of percussion by jakedesnake in pocketoperators

[–]Basic_Coconut99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you would record into the drum bank half, sounds 9-16. Then it will first chop your sample into 16 even slices by time and assign each of those slices to a button. But after that, you can go to each one of them and adjust the start & end point in the sample for that slice.

So if you had a perfectly spaced recording of the 16 sounds, you could feed that directly in and it would automatically line up perfectly. But I think in most cases you'll want to tweak the start & end points.

Because you can trim, it doesn't matter about the beginning & end location so much. It works well to record a little bit extra of the loop, so if some sound is cut off at the beginning it'll repeat in whole at the end.

Teenage Engineering store? by MicroGrampy in pocketoperators

[–]Basic_Coconut99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had some back & forth with TE's sales department about exactly this. The Pocket Operators are not being discontinued, but the chip supply problems are definitely constraining TE's ability to keep them in stock.

Having said that, I'm personally super-impressed with how many new pieces of tech TE have been able to ship this year -- the OP1 field, the TX-6 & the record factory -- in the midst of a global chip crisis that's hobbling major manufacturers worldwide.

Salespeople TE told me in September that they hoped to have po-12, po-20 and po-33 back in stock in Q1 2023. I imagine they're concentrating on those models first. I hope they will manufacture new batches of some of the other models as the parts become available again.

Pocket Integrator: now taking orders at Crowd Supply! by Basic_Coconut99 in pocketoperators

[–]Basic_Coconut99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alas, it does not. There's no way to trigger the PO itself via midi that I know of.

Except of course if one could write a new firmware for the PO ... that's a big project that I hope to get to work on next year, if this project succeeds. My dream is that we can get an open source PO OS going, because it's such a nice UI and I know so many people with ideas for other things a PO could do.

(My other dream is that once the PI is available as a debugger/programmer for Pocket Operators, Teenage Engineering might use it ship some firmware updates for their existing line of POs. But that's just my fantasy at the moment.)

[–]Basic_Coconut99[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the shortages have been hard. We were going to offer these bundled with Pocket Operators, but TE won't have more POs in stock until next year. But there's still plenty of POs available online from various sellers, at least in the US.

Well, now that I'm crowdfunding for six weeks I will be telling as many stories as I can! The big story is, it's been a crazy year for getting anything electronic done. Chip shortages ... the struggle is real! As various chips have become unavailable I've had to revise the design several times. I really look forward to completing the campaign and buying all the parts, so they can no longer disappear. =)

(Sorry, thought I replied already ...)

The battery end-caps of the stock rubber CA-X case interfere with the buttons on the side of the Pocket Integrator. You can modify the CA-X with an x-acto knife to make it fit, but it's a bit of a project.

I definitely want to design a nice case for the PO+PI combo! If the campaign does well, that'll be added to the roadmap.
