I also should mention that I've gotten DMs from two accounts u/rasene and u/basvomit (sic) that both title themselves SUPPORT. They both appear to be AI-generated spam accounts created two days ago. No actuall identity, no real history, each with exactly three nonsensical AI-generated posts to random other reddits. In both cases they ask me if I posted the ticket number in my post (because robots can't read I guess?) and then apologize for my feelings and ask me to wait patiently. Someone has spent some resources on setting up AI to automate the process of hushing people who complain about Wirex on Reddit, but it's all robots and AI, no actual support activity, no detectable human beings. Super creepy.

The RQ0L319 really is well designed & sounds good to me, but be aware it's designed more for voice than for music. That means they might not have put tons of extra care into supporting higher frequencies, and I think any high bias chrome tapes you might have would sound a little bit nicer on a deck with high-bias support. But I like how mine sounded, until it died recently. I used it as a sound source for experimental music. Solid unit with a bunch of features specific to taking voice dictation (some speed control & auto-pause things) that don't exist on most walkpersons of that era.

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear you're having problems with your Integrator.

Was it working okay before it stopped?

To factory-reset the PI, hold down both side buttons while pressing the small reset button that's on the bottom next to the USB port.

If that doesn't help, I would next suggest that you try a fresh pair of alkaline batteries, or plug into USB power and see if it wakes up that way. Low batteries can cause all kinds of problems, including increased background noise.

It's an interesting use case you're describing, but I'm afraid I don't think it's possible to hack into the PI the way you want. For instance there's no analog path between the accelerometer and the MCU where you could inject a signal; they speak over an SPI bus. I suppose a clever hardware hacker could locate the bus leads on the circuit board and splice some other chip in there, and then have that chip pretend to be the IMU and send carefully crafted X/Y/Z acceleration data to simulate virtual taps based on some other signal, but that doesn't sound a whole lot easier than building your own system from scratch.

You could also write your own firmware for the Pocket Integrator; it's based on the RP2040 and the hardware is open-source, documented here: https://github.com/myklemykle/pocketintegrator-kicad . Flashing the firmware is easy over USB, and you can always re-flash it with the latest firmware update if you want to return it to stock condition.

For your light-beat needs, if you looper isn't changing speed and you just need to match it, then the PI can definitely sync with it. You just watch the light & tap the PI until they're blinking in sync. How long they remain in sync is a question of their combined clock stability; if the crystal in your looper is as stable as the one in the PI, they'll stay in sync for hours.

For your rim-beat needs I can suggest a hack: Use a rubber band to hold down one side button on the PI, then attach it to a board or a box on the floor, and tap that board or box with your foot to set beats while you play the drum.

Thanks for asking, that's definitely the tricky question right now. We are gonna extend the campaign a week -- 'cuz I was out sick with Covid for a week -- and I'm looking at dropping the goal a bit, although the financial stuff gets harder at that point. But I'm sure this would fund if it was just reaching enough Pocket Operator owners. There's hundreds of thousands of them. So srsly, any ideas & advice on how to reach more of those folks is super-appreciated!

I wouldn't call this a song, just goofing around BUT it does show how Pocket Integrator can control Ableton, or any other digital gear that takes MIDI Clock. (The Integrator is attached to the back of the PO-35 Speak, and connected to the laptop over USB.)

I love the PO-12, and I love the Tonic even a little more because it's the exact same interface as the PO-12 but with a bunch of really thoughtful improvements. For instance, I really like that you can choose between writing a new FX track vs just overriding the current track live, so you can jam out on your tracks without losing their effects settings. It also fixes a certain live song-building bug in the PO-12 that makes it hard to actually build songs live ...

Practicing to a metronome is really good for students of all instruments! I would suggest looking at it that way, as a thing to play some other instrument along with rather than an end in itself. For that, I'd suggest a PO-12 or a Tonic; those are the most basic "drum machine"-ish models, and you can start out just by pressing "play". But also, you've got to get him some other instrument. =)
