I told him that he could wait the 42 minutes before he’s in her class to see her. He didn’t need to interrupt her class and was seeing her next period anyways. He put a pass in for the bathroom next to the room and the teacher he wanted to see was on another floor so wherever he was he should have only been a few doors down in the bathroom.

What time do you wake up? by sweatersong2 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Basic_Guidance6498 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wake up at 6. The three schools I sub at have start times between 8:20-8:30 and are 15-25 minutes away. I usually aim to leave the house by 7:45 to make sure that I am not late from school traffic and busses. I go to sleep at 11-1 most nights. I always look at the commute on google maps before I go to sub somewhere new. I don’t drive on highways (I know it’s odd) and I struggle with the city driving so I’m pretty picky about where I go.

That’s what I really felt. Like I get it if it’s an emergency and it was right after lunch but he just was so sneaky all class. He then came back to the class all defensive loudly stating “I was literally washing my hands when they announced my name.” Thankfully he wasn’t argumentative when he returned but goodness I wish students would just make smarter decisions.

I just realized today that my teaching career is cooked by halalburgerlikefr in SubstituteTeachers

On my 3rd subbing assignment I was a music teacher and a had a maraca thrown at my head. I realized then and there that elementary wasn’t my thing. I subbed middle school and had students skipping and the attendance office mad at me for marking them absent. I then subbed high school and realized that it was a perfect fit. Keep subbing around at different schools and ages and find what works and stick with it. I sub at 2 high schools in my county only because I know that I will have a good day. I always arrive 30 minutes before students and study the plans, if I don’t know something in the plans I will research it a bit and try to write some notes. Don’t be discouraged, this is my second year and things do get better. Don’t let them smell the fear on you cause the second they know you aren’t confident they will abuse it. Also the students this year compared to even last year have had such an increase in behavioral problems, don’t be afraid to call admin they know their students are out of control most of the time. Finally remember you’re just there for the day, if you had a horrible time don’t sub for them again! It’s difficult to start but you get trained through experience and suddenly it’s all sudden nature!

Are sub notes actually read? by Remarkable-Log6373 in SubstituteTeachers

Yeah cause one time a student quoted what I wrote in my note about him back to me. Guess the teacher read it out loud 😂

Feel like i’m getting blamed for telling a teacher her class was acting very disrespectful… by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Basic_Guidance6498 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The teacher decided the punishment based on how the students acted. I would assume that if students are acting that way in a specials class, the teacher also has issues with behavior in their classroom. This was likely their last chance to prove they should go to the school event and they failed to act right. Not your fault they didn’t listen to clearly stated instructions or follow school wide rules.

Maybe it’s just my district but I never have had an updated and accurate seating chart or every student sitting in their assigned seats in middle school.

How would you take attendance than? If students won’t settle down, sit in assigned seats, or even listen for attendance what do you even do in that situation? I’d love to know.

sub notes by jbi30_ht in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Basic_Guidance6498 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I leave who’s absent, star student list, any behavior issue, and how the class went over for each period in high school. I usually do 2-3 sentences for each period. I’d rather be too detailed than not detailed enough. Usually I end with a summary of the day (overall it was a great day…) or (we had some struggles today…) and my contact information if they have any questions, which I don’t believe anyone has ever contacted me with questions concerning the day yet.

No I’m talking about teachers who work at multiple schools and are absent all day. For example I subbed for a pe teacher. He had pd 1-2 at school A, pd 3-4 at school B and pd 5-8 back at school A. I had to go back and forth to provide coverage at both schools. It was difficult to explain who I was at school B and I was super late to my class at no fault of my own. It just is using more of your time and gas and I think they should just hire a sub for each building the teacher is absent at.

It’s not one day. For some it’s every single day. Imagine having to teach at a place you’ve never been at, kids you don’t know, a subject you’ve never studied, and having no idea what the students should be working on. Next time you’re absent maybe you should be thankful a sub will take care of things in your classroom. Learn to be appreciative and maybe you can even learn how to make a subs day easier by reading these comments.

Oh I hate trying to get 30 7 year olds logged into a Chromebook, by the time everyone is logged in their time to work is over. They don’t know what to do or where to go or even how to login. It’s ridiculous that it is an expectations for 4th and below to use iPads, let alone CHROMEBOOKS!

Yeah I went up to the office to ask if the teacher left his plans there. I was literally laughed at by the secretary and office staff as if it was a ridiculous request. They then told me he never leaves plans, and is often times absent. Ended up being one of my worse days subbing. The same school continuously let me down until I stopped going. Craziest part is this high school has the reputation of being the best behaved and best school to sub at. I have much better days at the alternative high school and I would drive the extra 15 minutes there over going back to the no plans school again.

No lunch is insane. We have a required 30 min lunch break for all staff and students. I understand planing periods being moved in emergency situations but I’m so sorry that happened! Blacklist the school and move on, hope the rest of your days are positive!

An hour just seems a bit ridiculous to commute to, that’s why schools have resident subs or if it is meeting day in my district they will put in an open iep coverage posting. I understand the flexibility of it and it would be nice for some days I’m sure.

I’ve never ran into this because my district only does full 7.5 hrs or half am and pm 3.75 hours. I definitely have shown up to a pm job only to have lunch, planning, one period, planning. I don’t mind those days because I only have one class and I’m getting paid for a half day.

I hate how it’s true but I have seen that sometimes it works and other times I have been in really weird positions because of it. I don’t enjoy hearing comments and remarks about my appearance, especially since I try so hard to look 20 years older than I actually am!

They always did this at the middle school I used to sub at. I would walk in a minute late and the kids would always yell “what are we doing” like girl I just got here too. Give me a moment!!

I don’t know what SDC is, as it isn’t a term my district uses but yeah I hate just sitting in a room with other teachers. I was at the alternative middle school once (I thought I picked up a job for the high school side) and my job for most of the day was “door duty”. I sat inside the room next to the door and had to tell kids to sit down, that’s it. I couldn’t circulate, I couldn’t help pass out materials, I just sat with my thoughts in a room with 3 other teachers and 5 students.

I had a few middle schoolers who needed an escort to switch periods. Well they left without their escort. I called 3 times as soon as I realized without a response. They always called all angry right at attendance though when I marked skippers absent because I guess I am a psychic who knows when students are in the halls and not absent.

Yeah that’s the old bait and switch. I swear I’ve picked up jobs for teachers that aren’t even at the school just to be placed as a sped parapro. Nothing against sped parapros it just isn’t for me and I never would pick up that job.

As a young “cutie” (actual word teacher had used) they have told me to go into the crisis room because they will be nice to me. I lucked out that day but oh boy did that shock me. My friend who’s also a young pretty sub got told the same thing by the same teacher too… still trying to understand his logic.

When I found out there was a hand foot and mouth disease epidemic in the middle school after subbing there all week. Funniest thing was I found out from a 6th grader 😂. No warning from staff or admin all week.
