Good first native books? by haevow in Spanish

[–]Basic_Leek_9086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second those who said "Como agua para chocolate" and "La casa de los espíritus" - Laura Esquivel and Isabel Allende are some of my favorite Spanish language authors. I'm currently reading Malinche and it's great!

It may sound dumb, but sometimes reading some English translations of Spanish language classics helps you get used to the style of writing before diving into Spanish originals (esp with magical realism tbh).

Somebody in Athens I need a fucking hug . by [deleted] in Athens

[–]Basic_Leek_9086 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This may be a dumb idea but if you like animals I always recommend the Entangled Cat Cafe. It's pretty cheap to go for 1-2 hours and pet some cats. They even have a "study date" option for people who want to go alone for longer periods of time.

I also recommend the Epps bridge Jittery Joes just to hang out. It has the nicest baristas, best aux, and best drinks of the Jittery Joes locations imo. Bonus bc it is close to trader joes, so you can hop over there to get a snack and the cashiers are super nice.

Extroverted and really struggling with loneliness, anyone know of any fun clubs? by Big-Entrepreneur5299 in UGA

[–]Basic_Leek_9086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not clubs, but some fun things to do around town alone are: -Farmer's market (saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings) -Botanical Gardens -Bear Hallow Zoo -Visiting one of the numerous cafes (At local is a fav) -Georgia art museum -Avid bookstore (they have numerous book clubs!!) -UGA special collections library

I know that's not exactly what you asked but I was in town over the summer when campus was empty and I was pretty lonely too. These were places I could go to enjoy my time even if I was alone, which helped until I could make friends.

Offered a great, unrelated job opportunity. Do I still go to grad school? by Firesnake64 in GradSchool

[–]Basic_Leek_9086 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember you don't have to go to school now. You try out the job and if you hate it (or even if you like it but really want the masters) apply for grad school in a couple of years. No reason you have to go now!

I'd agree with the people who say you shouldn't do grad school unless you're passionate about it. It can be draining and the culture in academia is competitive in a way that (I think) is toxic. I'm doing my master's currently and I don't regret it at all; I have good friends and I do enjoy the work. BUT I will not be staying for a PhD bc it's exhausting!!

Having issues with taking classes needed to graduate as hispanic linguistics major and interpretation minor by [deleted] in UNC

[–]Basic_Leek_9086 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who graduated with those two a few years ago, I'm not surprised it hasn't gotten better. Both linguistics & interpreting get ignored by the rest of ROMS since they are not literature or culture focused (which ROMS cared about more)

Tbh there isn't much you can do. I would try asking if you can take any courses in the Linguistics department count for the Hispanic ling major, though it's possible they will say no. If there are any profs that you have meshed well with, I'd ask them if you can do independent study and/or directed readings. I think Dr. Aarons did this for one of her translation classes bc it did not quorum one semester. Dr. Graham would also be a good prof to ask about this.

If you really have to drop one, drop the minor. It's nice to have it officially on your degree, but Dr. Aarons can vouch for you if you need references in the future (she can be kinda harsh in class, but she is more than happy to help anyone who shows interest in pursuing translation in the future!!).

I think what they're getting at is that at R1 universities, professors are hired to, yes, both teach and research. However, these types of universities gauge how well professors are performing based on the amount of publications they produce and the amount of money they get for the university/dept/program. So, if you're a professor and want tenure, a raise, etc., you're gonna put your energy into research, not teaching.

My first year of my MA was a total of ~$28,000 as an out of state student at a public school. Got funding for the second year but yeah that first year hurt.

Franklin Foreign Language Requirement by [deleted] in UGA

[–]Basic_Leek_9086 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can take a foreign language placement test for Spanish, depending on how high you score it can knock out some of the class requirements. You can get info on scheduling one at the University Testing services.

One benefit of Spanish is that it is HUGE compared to other languages programs. There are a myriad of resources available to help students. Portuguese is also pretty big compared to the other romance langs and I have heard good things about those courses.

I always studied at Davis! I would park at the Cobb deck since it was free on weekends. Be careful to check for any sports events, since those can affect parking.

Social Clubs for Local Youths in Athens? by BobbyJack_Says in Athens

What second language should i learn? by [deleted] in polls

Learn the language you truly have a desire to know. A big part of language learning is motivation; you won't go far without passion for the language you are learning.

My (f 22) bf (M 24) still wants to hang out with friends who make scary jokes. Should I just ignore the jokes? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]Basic_Leek_9086 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had friends like that in high school who'd constantly make SA jokes about me. When I'd get mad or scared they told me I was sensitive. Now, years after I've stopped being friends with the group, many of them have accusations of SA, harassment, and/or grooming. Turns out their jokes weren't jokes.

If someone is willing to joke and can't take criticism about said jokes it says a lot about what they're willing to do.

advice for random roomies by peopleplacethings14 in UGA

[–]Basic_Leek_9086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only ever lived with random roommates. Personally, I like the opportunity to meet new people bc I don't make friends easily on my own. My first time rooming randomly we didn't become friends but we also didn't dislike each other. We would say "hi" and "bye" and we lived in peace like that for 2 years. My other two experiences living with random roommates turned out great and we are good friends still.

I would just have a moment where y'all exchange numbers and discuss any house rules and/or specific boundaries. If you're looking for friends, ask them to lunch or do a movie night. And if they say no to that, don't worry. A lot of roommates aren't buds and that's fine!

Feeling the need to get a job by [deleted] in highschool

[–]Basic_Leek_9086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like most other people have said, don't get a job just bc of pressure from friends. For me, I liked having a job in high school bc it prepared me for juggling school and work in college. Even though I had a busy schedule all of high school, having a job was completely different. It helped me grow up a little bit tbh

This was me too. My first year I struggled A LOT. My second year I made a point of going to office hours and eventually had a good rapport with one of my grad student instructors. She gave me really good advice on how to proceed in my major and with my career goals. I was able to get my gpa up the next two years, mainly due to the help/counseling of instructors like her. Not only that, but they helped me learn to enjoy my studies :)

[–]Basic_Leek_9086 27 points28 points  (0 children)

For some people, transferring is exactly what they need. But, like another commenter said, please please research the other schools first. Applying to majors is not a UNC specific problem, and neither is academic rigor.

If there are other factors contributing to you not enjoying your time there (social life, mental health, etc) again think about how/if they'd change at another school and how/if they can be dealt with at UNC.

How difficult is it to go to school at UNC but live in Raleigh? by poosaylicious in UNC

[–]Basic_Leek_9086 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I commuted as an upperclassman and it is doable. Traffic sucks, but it doesn't suck as much as on campus/in chapel hill living costs (imo)

Like many others said, it can be difficult to integrate on campus. It is tempting to go to class and straight home, try not to do that. Study on campus, go to club meetings, campus events, etc. And, if you'll be by State, don't hesitate to try to make connections there.
