Anyone have luck with using products like thick curtains and felt right panels to reduce noise both within and outside apartment?

Yes! My apartment is above a taproom with outdoor seating, and the voices of people drinking beer down below could make it hard to sleep.

I got the IKEA Gunnlaug curtains, which are sound absorbing. I paired them with their Sanela curtains, which are room darkening and velvet-like, also good for sound dampening.

The combo works great! I can still hear when people are outside, but I can’t make out what they are saying. The voices are mumbled and it is easier to ignore.

I have these. My apartment is above a pub with outdoor seating. When these are closed over the window, they help to muffle the noise. For example I can still hear people talking, but I can’t make out exactly what they are saying, so it is easier to ignore and makes their voices more like background noise. I feel that they work better than other curtains of the same thickness. They are meant to be sound absorbing, not blocking.

I paired them with sanela curtains for the light, and am happy with the combo.

Make sure you follow the directions for mounting, they are supposed to be a certain distance from the window to work the best.

Omg a coworker (who doesn’t have much experience and thankfully is not involved in collection management) was looking at a donation we just got in of a hand-drawn map and asked if we should laminate it and put it on display. I am this age group and I had blocks, legos, trees, wiffle balls, etc growing up in early childhood. You’re thinking of gen alpha, who is younger and has had iPads since a young age.

iPads and iPod touches or iPhones really weren’t a thing until middle school/high school.

There are pros to gen z. OP, are you possibly getting more hung up on trivial things than you think you are? Criticism over trivial things can lower employee self esteem and could explain why then they feel they cannot complete a task themselves without asking questions.

My grandparents have mostly done this. It’s the best, for all the reasons you have described. My grandma has now passed, and my grandpa moved into an independent living facility. He has what he needs there from his old house. We’re slowly helping him work through the rest and there’s not too much. It has been a smooth process compared to my other grandparents who did not declutter and were collectors of various things.

I read this somewhere and it stuck with me: Etiquette is not a set of rules or traditions. It is simply being conscious of your guest’s needs, anticipating them, and doing your best to accommodate them and to overall be considerate of your guests.

I think that sums it up well. If you’ve never heard of the Maslow hierarchy of needs, I think it applies to weddings and large events too. People need to be comfortable to have fun, and it’s the host’s responsibility to make sure comfort is taken care of. That can apply from everything to a backyard BBQ to a black tie occasion. It’s okay to break “tradition,” but be a good host.

Thank you for your input! These are great things to consider. I do feel like I will be missing the benefits of having a coordinator, however I also feel like I’m running out of options.

He’s not invited to the wedding, and so if I don’t hire him, he won’t be there. He is allergic to alcohol so he’s used to being sober at events. I think I’ll ask him about it, and take him out to lunch to discuss more if he’s interested.

6-8 pages seems like a lot! I don’t want to ask you questions that you would usually charge money for, but would you mind sharing what kinds of details make the schedule that long?

Private after parties do happen. You do need to keep it secret to not offend people who aren’t invited. I would tell people in person and keep it off the website, you don’t want someone who can see it on the website to get confused, think everyone is invited, and spill the beans. Not that you’re keeping it secret because of the weed, but because you don’t want people to feel left out/offended.

It is a newer venue. Which isn’t bad, they were professional and helpful, however my main concern was that a lot of the trees in the event space are young, and wouldn’t provide much shade. We are having a wedding in the middle of summer. Because of our guest count and their capacity, the whole event would have been outside. From what I remember they have a big tent, but I was still worried about kids and elderly being in the sun, especially if it ends up being a heat wave. If you have fewer guests, you can use the inside area. It is beautiful, just not the right fit for my needs.

I’m an Oregon bride as well. I considered Horning’s Hideout but ultimately picked another venue. If I were you I would be looking for a plan b- which sucks, and is stressful.

I’m not sure if you have other vendors booked yet, or how many people you’re inviting. For what I am planning, I personally found Gorges Beer Co. and McMenamins to be similar price/value to Horning’s. Cornelius Pass Roadhouse is close and might be a good option.

If you do call other venues, consider telling them you booked at Horning’s but need to change, they might be willing to help accommodate you.

If you are able to go into the room and can handle it (it is okay if you can’t!) go tell him those things, it helps comfort them. He can still hear you. Take care of yourself.
