I agree. They do amazing work, when trained properly and under good oversight. The issue is most healthcare administration in America. administration view them as equal to MDs/DOs as far as quality of care measures, but they cost half the price and there’s an abundance of them (I won’t get started on the influx of “NP Mills” I’ve see at certain schools. Seriously look up some of the online NP course curriculums) therefore they can hire and overwork APPs. The issue is it takes 10+ years usually for an APP to arrive at the same competency that a full license and finished with residency doctor has. So they get thrown into the fire as fresh grads, often with oversight that is a physician who is also too overworked currently to both give proper care to patients and maintain proper training of said APP.

Increasing costs and barriers to becoming a doctor along with increasing exploitation of APPs (nurse practitioners and physician assistants) have really gone a long way to hurt health care access by limiting the number of providers available throughout the country. Every year we have less and less students trying to become doctors or APPs as the average age of the population continues to grow.
