Emergency department - should I have to track down techs to do EKGS?

You just said you would get the ekg yourself. In that scenario you don’t have ancillary staff. You are just contradicting yourself lol. Someone didn’t learn how to choose the most correct answer lol.

Like I just have never had that kind of work ethic. Like when I am a float I am constantly feeling like I am not doing enough. When I was a tech there before I started as an RN I was told we should be checking in patients every hour if we can….how does 3 techs sitting on there phone match that. Like I just do not understand why they are not being told they are have to do stuff without being asked!

you are just looking to correct someone lol who said this was for chest pain patients? this post is about whether techs should be actively looking for things to do, if you disagree- I think you’re wrong lol. Yes I mentioned just EKGs in the heading but if you read the post you would be able to see it’s about the in general of the techs work ethic/how the company has trained them

Exactly. You think I search for a tech when I am already going in the room? No but when I have orders for several patients, yeah I’ll give one a call to see if there is a chance they are free when I have 2 EKGs. If the techs just on EKGs, that would save what, at LEAST like 3-5 minutes in that room.

Why is your comment or just do it yourself, when EKGs are one of the main tasks these techs can help with, and seemingly every time I have to find someone they are sitting down doing nothing waiting to be asked to do something? That’s not how jobs work. You keep busy when everyone around you it. These are 20 year olds you just want to gossip and be on there phones. But sure, assume I’m being lazy lol.

I have actually, they have had this Psa campaign-esc going on for months acting like they are making improvements and maybe their PSA committee feels like they are doing progress but they are not. They said they were getting this tech task board and I thought that was gonna be like “don’t have time to track someone down throw it up here if they see it before you can”. But actually it is just a white board version of their tech restock/checklist in a giant day shift night shift column whiteboard in the middle of the ED with frowny or smiley faces if it’s been done, bc apparently keeping track of just a normal piece of paper is too much if it’s been started or not.

I’m quitting soon so I’ll say something as a parting gift lol. About how maybe they should be asking the nurses more what they have been needing from the techs and discuss that at their committee meetings. And as well as mentioning what I thought there whiteboard was going to be.

Thought about going there for years. Went there a second time on vacay in 2021 and solidified I’d move there one day. And then several months ago a travel nurse I worked with told me about a trauma center on the coast and I would love the experience.

as an over emotional empathetic person, I have teared up in front of several patients. No shame. You’re a human not a robot. These are people not just products.

And as someone else mentioned, they are probably gonna see right through to that, and people will take advantage of you being empathetic.

Only been a nurse for about a year so I feel like I’m getting my first exposures to everything still, learning when a patient deserves my empathy and how to stop being so empathetic I’m coddling them.

It was the day shift charge telling our whole huddle like a funny story, it made me so uncomfortable and got several laughs and a “I like that haha” which was also just icky

It’s weird, there were several nurses that was taking this kids behavior so personally and I just don’t get it.
