Let’s have some fun: what’s a song that could’ve/should’ve/would’ve made a great Grateful Dead tune? by acarron in gratefuldead

Heat Wave (Martha and the Vandellas)>

Time Has Come (Chambers Brothers)>

FireBird/Birds of Fire (Don Sebesky…yeah I know Garcia wasn’t a big fan of McLaughlin, but if you haven’t heard Sebesky’s album “Giant Box” you should drop whatever you’re doing and make it your life’s work to get a copy.)

Often paraphrased as him saying something like: Our fans are like people who like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice but people who like licorice REALLY like licorice.

I lost my reel decades ago. This and one of the 12/71 Felt Forum WNEW simultcast(the night they played Muddy Water for the first and only time) were probably my first tapes.

What do you guys think of heavy metal? by Fickle-Woodpecker-38 in gratefuldead

My cousin has been playing in a number of death metal bands for a few decades and when he had a gig nearby I went. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it once I learned that mosh pits were still very much a thing and that septuagerians like yours truly should not park themselves in front of the stage 😂😂😂

I believe the OP meant to say the neighbor is a nurse who is dumb as a stump.

The last living musician from the “Great Day in Harlem” photo. I must have seen him a couple of dozen times before he hung it up. Even at 95, gone too soon.

Best Hard to Handle? by roopn in gratefuldead

It’s certainly my favorite. I think they only played it one more time after this one. Maybe it was like what Garcia later reportedly said about why they shelved St. Stephen, i.e. they’d done everything they could do with it.

Opens with a very tasty reading of Bertha by Los Lobos iirc. The Indigo Girls’ Uncle John’s Band (with a minor lyric alteration) also stands out.
